Lloydie
Livepool have been sold http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,,2006989,00.html 174 million was the asking price. For a club in the champions league, with a new stadium on the way and 45 million in debt. Anyone still think our shareholders were being reasonable asking for £150m for Newcastle? Dokko
Net debt, they owe much more than that, £88m IIRC. Still a good deal, although their stadium is worth nothing, we are valued around the £100m mark by FS & the Halls, its was the land deal that bumped it up again, IIRC. , and it was only in that ball park with the joint Casino deal thing, which isn't happening, best we can hope for is a hotel. Dokko
So what does everyone think of the takeover? It will get them a new stadium at least, meaning the turnover will be greater in the future. But apart from that i cant see them getting huge amounts of money every season to spend, but i reckon it will take them closer to Chelsea & Manu in the next season or so, i expect a decent initial investment in to the team in the summer, exciting times for Liverpool fans, i just think the new owner are dodgy, both been bankrupt, and not so long ago, one of them caught up in a pay scandel and the other has backed one of the most dangerous men in the world in to power, and paid for him to do so. This shows they've made bad judgment calls in the past, but we all learn from our mistakes, but the fans will expect massive investment in the team, and will be dissapointed when they dont receive it. I don't think they'll spend particularly huge amounts of money, either. Gillett and Hicks aren't *that* rich (in football terms) and will probably want to run the club like a business, so there won't be RA style stupidity. Liverpool always strike me as having been badly managed (at all levels) at precisely the wrong time to have been badly managed. If things had been just a little different, they could have been the club that did colossally well out of the premiership, as it happened, it was Man United instead. Slugsy
Lets not kid oursleves, they are going to have a good bit of cash to spend, they already have a good manager and a very good nucleus of a squad - the only way they are going is up.
Guest Jai
Agreed, it can only get better for pool. The new owners came across very well in the press conference. It doesnt matter about their political preferences, even the fact theyve gone bankrupt before says a lot as they have managed to claw their empires back. Still. Wish it was us though. This makes the gap to the top4 even bigger, just arsenal left now, and they will probably be in foreign hands by the end of next season...
The Bonk
Was it not Liverpool fans giving Man U support the worst stick about having an american owner?

Sad, but true. We can hope for all the Leeds United scenarios in the world, it isn't going to happen. Plus, the two situations don't even begin to compare. Guest teepee
yeah - they will distance themselves even further from the likes of us now..... fuck sakes - the divide in english football is getting bigger all the time...

Aye, our chances of winning anything meaningful have taken another hit today, but with Liverpool now bought, what other realistic options are there left for anyone wanting to takeover in the greatest league in the world? Guest WalkervilleMag
they have bought the club and written off there debt (88 million ?) so for now they are debt free, but they will borrow to build the new stadium
Dokko
they have bought the club and written off there debt (88 million ?) so for now they are debt free, but they will borrow to build the new stadium Not in total. They only paid off half of it. Why not i dont know, im guessing the other half is very low interest or owed to a board member, so eventually the club will be £300m in debt, as the stadium is costing £250m according to them. Guest Sniffer
Pool getting sold probably doesn't affect us as much as the likes of Villa.
Guest WalkervilleMag
but with them in the champions league, and no club looking likely of displacing one of the top 4 clubs, then they can make big profits. £20 million per year for playing in the champions league, and the top 4 will get a minimum £40 million with this now tv deal comming up. Guest Scouseman
88 million was lazy reporting of Steve Morgans valuation of the debt, which included future payments for players etc. Net debt is now 44 million and will leave the club debt free, players paid for. The stadium will be built on loans made by the new owners who will take it on in their own company and not LFC. It remains to be seen whether it's a good or bad move. Guest Sniffer
I don't see us challenging Liverpool's position anyway. But if Villa got a huge cash injection and it became the big five we'd be further down the pecking order. Is there no arab sheikh whose grandad used to a pitman in Consett out there? Guest thommo78
The sad thing is more and more of our top clubs are becoming foreign owned. It doesn't happen to much in Italy or spain. I've got nothing against it but feel it's a sad state when more and more of our top clubs will be owned by companies outside of the UK. Essentially the money we put into the game is likely to end up in forign pockets and not back into the game at grass roots!! Of course I'd like NUFC to be taken over by someone with deep pockets but i just think it is removing the game more away from the fans and closer to a global brand. Lloydie
Just to check, of the 20 Premiership clubs we now have Chelsea (Russian) Man U (American) Liverpool (American) Aston Villa (American) Portsmouth (Russian) West Ham (Icelandic) 30% of the league wholly foreign owned. Of these clubs only Man U actually acts like a business, in that it makes profits and invests sanely. Four of the rest live beyond their means, and with Liverpool it's too early to tell what they're going to do, but I'd guess that with a new stadium they could be self supporting and compete at the top level. Lloydie
On a less? pessimistic note I can see the current fad for buying premiership sides fading away when the owners get bored (Is Abramovich already bored?) and folks realise that the profits aren't there. Mick
To think that 10 years ago the table looked like this: 1.Manchester United 2.Newcastle United 3.Arsenal 4.Liverpool
Guest Sniffer
It could be a fad but equally it may be that these people are visionaries who see a breakaway super league providing substantial profits. They don't care about football but are business men. I think the bloke at West ham might be a fan first though.
