I agree, but football is going to remain a financial regsathon, unfortunately.  That’s unlikely to ever change.

A model of infinite growth on a finite path means that the bubble will inevitably burst at some point or people like us will have long since checked out from what it'll have become by the time it's at that point.

If you are going to make lies up, at least make them believable.

The council categorically cannot say that something will or won’t get planning permission. A planning officer can work with the client and say what will and would likely pass or be needed too. They will also advise the council if it goes to a planning committee on if it should or shouldn’t be permitted.

They won’t say something won’t get permission without even knowing details etc. It is just not how bureaucracy in the planning department works.

And the drawbacks of the move aren’t clear either - if the move was to Castle Leazes, what drawbacks are there?

I'm absolutely fascinated that you're so certain there are no drawbacks whatsoever, for literally anyone else but yourself

Sitting in a curvy modern placca joy vacuum instead of an actual football ground for one. There's not one new ground in the UK I'd rather watch games in than ours.

I'm still to be convinced that we'll be the first English football club to achieve a matchday experience that isn't completely naff/sanitised/artificial/whatever compared to what we already have, imperfect as it is.

I don't really know what to make of the design argument. I'll obviously miss SJP a lot because I've known it my whole life and I love it, but I'm not convinced there's something about the design itself that makes it a better ground for atmosphere etc than a newer one.

Exactly this  this pipe dream of Being Able To Compete Long Term; and a stadium that can magically convert the sound of old men muttering into the cacophonous roar that we all know perfectly well is there already when the crowd is up for it. Literally cannot believe folk are clamouring to be part of the super league elite that we all rightly turned our noses up at a few years ago.

Appreciate I'm in an ever diminishing minority here but would honestly rather the cash dried up and we spent the next 30 years playing the mackems and Port Vale

What are your thoughts on a closed-roof stadium? (Something like the Bernabeu, where it can both open and close).

I'd love to see a mock-up of one, think it could make for a loud atmosphere.

Is it even allowed to play PL games indoors?

Well if it's not that would certainly put an end to this conversation.

I'd respect your "honesty" a bit more if you just admitted you quite like where you sit now and don't give a fuck about anyone else, like 😉

IF that's what you mean 😎

Well I assumed that went without saying  I'm obviously not speaking on behalf of anybody else, I felt like this forum was advanced enough not to require an 'imo' for every point like

I haven't had a season ticket for ten or fifteen years though

Although this wasn't directed at me I'm a member, buying tickets for most games with all of the time/hassle/money that involves and sitting all over the shop.

There is no rule for the Premier League, and FIFA allow it, but I believe if the roof is closed at the start of the game, then you have to keep it closed until half time, or until full time, you can’t open it during game play.

With how climate change will change the weather in future, we’ll probably have to allow for it, globally.

Nah, really. I can't believe the outrage at the proposed super league breakaway has so quickly become just wanting desperately to be part of that same cartel that we all know is completely and utterly fucking the sport.

If people want to be part of that because it's the only way to compete then fair enough, like I say I'm not trying to speak for anyone else. I think it's a fucking shit state of affairs and have no interest in us being part of pulling the ladder up

I think it's fairly easy to understand like. A matchday income increase of that level isn't a silver bullet and barely moves the needle overall. If there's an argument for a stadium move being the catalyst for a 'big 6' style commercial income leap I'm genuinely all ears, but I've never seen it put forward.

This is quite literally the exact discussion / argument a number of people have been making for quite awhile now.

A new stadium is without question a catalyst for commercial income. And if you increase match-day and commercial income significantly you are then more likely to qualify for Europe, which increases your broadcast revenue. Consistent European qualification also grows your match-day revenue and allows for bigger commercial deals. As revenue continues to grow you can buy more players and more expensive players, which makes player trading a more consistent revenue stream. Some of that can be achieved with a refurbished stadium, but unfortunately the site limitations put a cap on that.

Money doesn't guarantee league titles and trophies. It doesn't even guarantee European football anymore given the number of clubs in the mix each season. But it does guarantee the possibility of those things. Whether it's all worth it comes down to the actual projections for what NUFC can expect to make (not what a London based club is making) and the other trade-offs like location, history, etc.

Canny pious pedestal you've put yourself on there mind.

I totally agree that the cartel, PL, UEFA and the Spanish duo are "utterly fucking the sport" but the only way to have a team that can compete, on any level, with them is by having similar owners. If not worse.

Having anew ground doesn't mean one's begging for an ESL spot, no?

As always, the reality is somewhere in the middle. I don’t think we’re trying to be a super league club, even with a new stadium, but I sure as fuck loved watching us dismantle PSG 4-1 like. Doing the same to Port Vale in a half full SJP doesn’t really have the same vibe for me.

I think we’re just trying to be in and around it every season. Competing. A new stadium helps us move into the reality of where football is now and is heading so we can compete and entertain (the main reason this sport even exists).

And that’s before we even get to the fact that us across the pond who have been supporting this club for over 20 years sure do love being able to watch us play on the weekends. I don’t want that to go away really.

There's nothing more I can add, really. We've seen for the last decade the control that's exerted on the game by the big clubs and the leagues and organisations that run the game, to the detriment of the other clubs. I personally would prefer that Newcastle weren't viewed as part of that.  It's not out of any sense of piety  and it's nothing to do with my views on our owners, it's just about how I'll feel hearing Newcastle being talked about as part of the problem by other clubs' fans.

Yeah but those other clubs fans are misguided, at best.

We're not part of the cartel. For the most part I get you.

Football is fucked. Bit like white western democracy*
