I wonder if people from Newcastle and specifically those near the toon are more attached to SJP.

To me it's hallowed ground. I lived in the literal city centre (John Dobson) for some time and the cathedral on the hill is ever present. Not just just the presence on the cityscape but the sound coming from the ground, the buzz in the centre on a gameday.

I obviously want us to be bigger and better, but I hope they use roughly the same area. Leazes is not far and would present similarly. :)

Born in Newcastle, and lived there until I was in my late 30s coming up to a decade ago.  ST holder for a couple of decades.  Never got glassy eyed re SJP - it doesn’t even look like the ground I started going to.  The club is the support, not the ground.

I’m not attached to SJP, and never was.  The only parameters for a stadium for me is that it must be in Newcastle.

edit: I never liked the ‘cathedral on the hill’ stuff either, miserable bastard that I am :) - proper George Caulkin doing diluted Nick Hornsby stuff.

Agreed RE that a new stadium must be in Newcastle. I remember all that shite about moving to Benton. :icon_puke_r:

Hate those sterile stadiums in places they ought not to be with massive fuck off car parks. I worry a bit about a North American CEO in regards to this but still optimistic generally that we'll get it right.

Divnt agree with your other stuff but each to their own. : )

Nothing worse than a football ground in an industrial estate with a fuck off car park.  Derby’s new ground instantly springs to mind on that front - I went to the Baseball Ground a couple of times and loved the feel of the place; then going to Pride Park in Xmas ‘97 and being concerned that the future of football was flat pack stadia in the middle of nowhere.  It’s why I smile when people talk about football selling its soul recently - it’s been going on for decades.

Can't say I am like. Never been a fan of it since the 2000 extention and I absolutely despise being up in Level 7 because it's such a detached and soulless experience. The only time I seem to get a ballot win is when I apply for up there with my son as well!

I was far more attached to my first ever house that I'd scrimped and saved to get a deposit for a mortgage for tbh! Unfortunately the time came when we needed somewhere bigger, and we moved to a bigger more modern one that suited our needs more.

A thread worth keeping an eye on, if we do announce a new stadium. https://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/new-everton-stadium-hill-dickinson-stadium.66451/page-9629

For all of the "designed for atmosphere" crack they aren't enjoying it much right now. Early days I suppose, but you could hear a pin drop last night.

But it goes to show that any new NUFC stadium absolutely MUST be designed not only with acoustics as a priority, but also carefully thought out singing sections.

I really don't want to see a Dortmund-style black & white wall at any new stadium either. I think 70s-style kop ends don't work, especially with how fanbases are today, and the views right near the back would be bloody awful too. We are trying to get away from that problem with Level 7.

Premier league atmospheres are shit 90+% of the time. No matter where you go

Its the people inside football stadiums not the stadiums themselves that are the main problem now

Just look at how shit the leazes, east stand and most the gallowgate is at SJP

You'd struggle to find more than 3 or 4k who want to stand and add to the atmosphere in SJP ( or a new stadium) thesedays

Which is why the old style of a single tier, giant kop end would never work for us. We aren't the same kind of fanbase as Dortmund.

Agreed

Atmosphere may as well not be factored into any new ground anyway because most people who go dont give a fuck about it or adding into it.

I think the problem with Everton is that their fans just are not that vocal unless they are booing or on the rare occasions they have a 6 pointer to stay up.

Spurs’ supposed to be decent for crowd noise. I’ve only really been for the NFL, and they aren’t really the type of fan to chant.

I think a single tier kop would be good, however it needs to have the fans from the Strawberry corner and the back of the Gallowgate in it to generate the atmosphere. I also think Spurs’ provides a good opportunity for displays and the flags.

Wor flags has shown how their actions can generate an atmosphere. Many other clubs have tried to replicate it and not been anywhere near as good, or are only able to do it for the odd big game.

At the very least, a single tier kop stand give us fans an area of the stadium that isn’t interrupted by hospitality areas/boxes.

Disagree, I reckon a full safe standing kop like "New Gallowgate" would be class.

As long as there's a concession made for a 45-year old cunt like me to get in

I still think that most of those who make an atmosphere simply dont bother to even try to get get tickets now, due to the shitty ballot. A 75k stadium with tickets that are easier to get might encourage them more.

I had an interesting experience being in the Strawberry Corner for Arsenal. Of course it was louder than anywhere else in the ground but I wouldn't say that the profile of fans is really any different to most other areas.

So either it's the reputation of the area or the safe standing, or a bit of both.

Just saying really that other places in the ground have potential to be noisy if the circumstances were right. I think most people want to make noise to some extent.

A lot of them are priced out or can't be arsed with modern football and everything that comes with it.

Not the working class game it once was. Just a load of customers

Each to their own but I think it would be crap. Spurs' much-vaunted kop end is absolutely shit, for instance.

The days of filling a huge kop end with 20k+ radgies are over.

I think its more that they cant be arsed with jumping through hoops to go to a football match. Remove that obstacle and they'd be back.

Just have a massive Battle Royale on the Town Moor.  When there are 20K left, they get the tickets.

And younger lads who would’ve made a lot of the noise in years gone by either are priced out (the average price of a ticket for a non-cup game must be 65 quid, fucking rank) and/or aren’t able to sit together so don’t bother.

Got to say I've been to most of the big German grounds and even on the terracing behind the goal there's only a relatively small % of them actually join in with the songs regularly. The rest of the ground pretty much sits in silence as more of an audience as well.

Dortmund as the example. The South Terrace, aka the yellow wall, has a capacity of 25k yet there's only the fans in the centre and towards the front that really join in with the chants, maybe 5/6k. The rest are more reactive to the game, like we are in England. Been to other grounds with big terraces behind the goals, Schalke, Frankfurt, Koln, Monchengladbach and found it the same at those places.

Exactly why I don't think it would work for us either.
