Why Duff's been disappointing

I did feel sorry for him tonight despite my critisism of him in the past; should have had the ball on numerous occasions when he was completely free.

Wasn't the first time this happened either, tbf. He is ALWAYS screaming and waving for the ball, but never gets it

Maybe it's cos he looks a bit spazzy?

Harsh - but true!

If we'd given him the ball and then had a forward attack the near post when he crossed i reckon he'd have had a couple of assists last night. Martins in particular is Duff-blind.

Aye, me and my dad were in the East stand and Duff was standing just in front of us with no one in about 15 yards of him and Martins just dribbled into a wall of defenders and lost posession. Duff went aboslutely bonkers. Terrible service yesterday.

Honestly thought at one point last night that Duff and Martins must have fallen out because there were a couple of occasions he had soo much space and Martins would either try and do it himself or pass to Sib when he was covered by defenders.

Don't really think they have fallen out but it was odd!

one thing i noticed from the "boro game last weekend was how idolated charlie looked left wing compared to milner on the right

it seemed to me that the whole team was looking to move the ball right simply 'cause solano is comfortable in possession and taylor is not in the FB role....also taylor was reluctant to make overlapping forward runs so charlie was up against 2 men the whole time, noone making runs and moving people out of position for him

DD must be a victim of this to a degree...if we had a competent, fit, left-footed left-back who was looking to take the ball then it would open up space and opportunity for out left winger

this lack of FB's just can not be allowed to continue

Excellent point. And the lack of quality amongst our so-called specialist FBs must be addressed if we are to progress next season.

He's been disappointing because his fitness is poor, or rather his conditioning is, and because he's lost his form - injuries haven't helped either. I doubt he'll recover and get back to the level he was at with Blackburn and Chelsea myself like but that's just me. He played well last night though, tactically especially, helping Carr out down that left.

He doesn't get the ball because we don't have a fully fit midfielder capable of spotting and playing quick balls on the break.

Get out of town!! It's 100% Duff's fault, man.

Laurent Robert always used to cry about the same problem too, not seeing enough of the ball. Having right-footed centre midfielders means they carry the ball on their right side, and so are usually playing with their heads up to the right wing, back to the left wing.

That's why emre finds it easier to get duff more involved in the game, for a right footer to play it left you need more time, space on the ball.

Don't know why Martins doesn't play it to duff though. If i had to guess i'd say it's because whenever he gets the ball the karate kid theme tune blazes loudly in his mind ("you're the best, around!!) an he goes on a mad one

Gary Speed quite probably played in over 90% of the games that Laurent Robert played for us, and he was a left-footed central midfielder, so I wouldn't say that completely explains it. Emre would help Duff simply because he has the best vision/passing out of all of our central players, not just because he's left-footed.
