Farrington - Dutch disaster has United on road to nowhere

There's so much which could be said about the pathetically premature, farcically feeble demise of yet another season for Newcastle United.

It could be said that, even with so many Magpie misadventures to live down to, Glenn Roeder's "men" plumbed new depths in Alkmaar.

Could be said that Titus Bramble's enduring presence in the Newcastle side is the perfect gauge of the club's decline.

Could be said that Steven Taylor is suffering so badly alongside him as to risk ruination.

Could be said that the inadequate Paul Huntington is both the ultimate victim and indictment of botched (or lack of) business in the transfer market.

Could be said that Damien Duff's best days are not so much behind him as in the last century.

Could be said that Emre is a man you'd want anywhere but next to you in the trenches.

Could be said, indeed, that you'd want none of Thursday's team with you in the trenches, for fear they shoot both of you in the foot.

Could be said that, having put a gun to his head by picking the wrong team in the first place, for a manager to chase the game with three identikit central midfielders while pacy wingers warm the bench represented suicide.

But more than anything, it could be said that Newcastle, in stumbling out of Europe like stag weekenders onto an EasyJet flight, look like a side going nowhere.

And considering, as Roeder says, all that really matters now is what happens next, that doesn't bode well. In fact, it spells disaster.

United may have no silverware to chase these next two months, but they are fighting for the future of the club as we know it.

Trouble is, it's doubtful the players realise that. Even less likely that they care.

That club is built on a fanbase inflated twofold by the promise of success these last 15 years.

Now, more than at any time in that decade and a half, that promise appears empty.

And that promises empty seats next season. Many thousands of them.

Similar warnings have been issued in the past, of course.

But there was a sense of finality about the midweek Dutch disaster; a feeling that here was incontrovertible proof of Newcastle's new place in the world: nowhere of note.

And if that doesn't worry Roeder - and worry his bosses even more - then a nasty surprise is on its way.

For the tactical aberrations in Alkmaar ate up the last of the manager's credit.

And his board are already deep in their fans' debt.

Up to their necks, in fact.

At least he's put some of the blame away from the players, unlike the prick who reports for the Chronicle.

why would you want to take any of the blame away from the players?

fact of the matter is that the players blew it even though they had the knowledge that they could better alkmaar from the first leg - never mind all this manager/tactics sh!t...if it was all down to that, and roeder told them to do exactly what they did, then they should be ashmed of themselves that they couldn't take the game by the scruff of the neck and ignore the managers tactics and win the game

blame the manager all you want but they players we had out had enough experience beyween them to win regardless of whatever tactics they were given - furthermore they were sh!te til half time so if it was all tactics then they should have told the manager at half time to change it or we'd lose

the idea that our players are empty vessels with no autonomy is fucken tragic - the players are at least as much to blame as the manager, arguably more as they're better paid and there are more of them

and any board related arguments don't come into it, it was a problem on the pitch this time not in boardroom

So that fact Paul Huntington should be nowhere near our back four, let alone playing at leftback, has nothing to do with manager or board?

Was it the players who decided we should end the game with no width  cos of crap substitutions?

no, i'm not saying the manager is blameless but nor are the players

if someone is so totally out of his depth and is getting tortured on the pitch then it's up to the players to get involved if the manager can't see it, or won't do anything about it - do you think shearer would have sat in the dressing room saying "yes boss" if he'd had to watch a bairn out of position get murdered and see nothing done about it?  would he f@ck

they're all culpable but the idea that some of the blame should be taken away from the players enrages me

my point about the board is that it's an argument for another time and place - everyone on here tries to turn everything into pro or anti board arguments when there's no need....the group of players, on paper, were good enough to win the tie on thursday, that they didn't comes down to the players AND manager

I was just highlighting the difference between Farrington who has laid the blame on all involved while Oliver never has a bad word for the person who sat next to him during talk-ins.

Absolutely horrifically written, but cannot argue with most of it. Saying that, the useless bastard isn't saying anything that the vast majority of posters on here aren't already. Fucking shite article, though, as articles go.

Farrington has never been one to shy from slagging the manager/chairman, recently at least.

Good. It's rather nice to see some supporters frustrions reflected in the local rags once in a while, and for that alone Farrington is far from a 'useless bastard'.

Shite writing, though, innit? The Journal, IMO, have done a far better job summing up events this week and the lads who write for that aren't even Geordies.

The way it's written, formatted, scructured... I know it's from the Sunday Sun, and I shouldn't be expecting anything brilliant, but it's utterly average and not at all easy to read. Barely scratches the surface on most points, as well.

when oliver goes (hopefully soon) its a knocking bet the journal lads will not get the toon

chronicle job for obvious reasons if you read there articles and blogs .they would not be welcome at st james for writing the truth in there articles etc.
