Skirge
From .co.uk We Won't Give Up On Euro Dream Says Al By Ian Willis ALAN Shearer is refusing to give up on the European dream following Saturday's 3-1 win over Tottenham at St. James' Park. The success over Martin Jol's Champions League-chasing side stopped the rot after a miserable run of four straight defeats, and while the skipper acknowledges that qualifying for Europe is going to be tough, he is not yet giving up. Shearer, who marked his 300th Premiership appearance for the club with his 203rd Magpies goal, said: "You cannot rule anything out. "While getting into Europe is going to be very, very difficult we will not give up and we will fight and scrap for everything right to the end. "We know that if we play like we did against Spurs then we will get a few more points on the board. "It was important not only just for ourselves and for Glenn Roeder that we put a show on against Spurs but for our supporters. "It would have been a long week for them and us if we had not picked up the three points but now we can all enjoy the rest of the week before we go to Middlesbrough on Sunday." Shearer was well impressed with the display against Spurs, and felt it was one of the best displays on home spil for some time. He went on: " Our four defeats in a row were just was not good enough and we had a point to prove out there. "I thought our first half performance was the best we have produced here at St James Park for a long, long time. "Now we have to go out and produce that sort of performance in our remaining games this season - starting at Middlesbrough." Guest ChickenKiev
Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. TêteDeMaure
We just aren't going to get there. The PR team at Newcastle needs sacked, first roder telling blatant lies about Owen, Emre will he won't he.
Guest Ridzuan
I think the chance of us qualifying for europe now is only 1%.It might still happen so I guess we will just have to wait and see if it does.

Nobody
We're not going to get into europe, though there is still a lot to play for. Play good and both players and managers will be more interested in us

Leazes1986
Well you wouldn't expect him to say anything else really though would you? Obviously the aim should be to win all of our remaining games. I think we will win them all with the exception of maybe a point against the smoggies, and maybe a point against Chelsea although we should really be expecting to win any home game no matter who its against. We won't get into Europe, but it would be more worrying if he came out and said there's no chance fo us getting into Europe. There's 18 points to play for. If we got them all that would put us on 60 points. There is only 3 teams who have more than 60 points in the Premiership. Obviously we havent got a hope in hell of finishing 4th, and we won't win all our games, but looking at the fixtures on paper we should be capable of getting 15 points if we played to our potential. If Bolton slip up in the games in hand there's a chance we could finish 7th, but if not then we have a chance of finishing 8th. How many UEFA Cup places is there this season? For England it looks like 3 UEFA Cup places and one Intertoto. According to the page below, 11 teams are going to qualify from the Intertoto so that it looks like a sort of branch of the UEFA Cup which would explain why every nation has an Intertoto space now. From http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/qual2006.html : 2 England 63.224 ---------------------------------------- CL1-3=Chelsea 79.290 (cl/R1) CL2= (cl/R1) CL3= (cl/QR3) CL4= (cl/QR3) CW= (uc/R1) UC2= (uc/R1) UC3= (uc/R1) (league cup) IT= (it/R3) (league 32/38, next Apr 8, last May 7, rsssf, sw, uefa, bbc) (cup sf Apr 22, final May 13, rsssf, sw, bbc, fa) (league cup: rsssf) (Manchester United qualified for European football) From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FA_Premier_League : "The top four teams in the Premiership qualify for the UEFA Champions League, with the top two teams directly entering the group phase. The third and fourth placed teams enter the competition at the third qualifying round and must win a two-legged knockout tie in order to enter the group phase. The fifth placed team automatically qualifies for the UEFA Cup, and the sixth and seventh placed teams can also qualify, depending on what happens in the two domestic cup competitions. If the FA Cup champions and runners-up both finish in the top 5 of the Premier League, the FA Cup's UEFA Cup spot goes to the sixth placed team in the League. If the League Cup is won by a team that has already qualified for Europe, the League Cup's UEFA Cup spot also goes to the next highest placed team in the League (unlike the FA Cup spot, it is never transferred to the losing finalist)." By that logic, one of West Ham/Charlton/Middlesborough get a UEFA Cup spot whether or not Liverpool/Chelsea wins the FA Cup. However, since Man U. won the Carling Cup, which doesn't pass the UEFA Cup spot to the losing finalist, sixth place in the league becomes a UEFA Cup spot so maybe seventh place is the Intertoto Cup spot. But then, if one of West Ham/Charlton/Middlesborough gets to the final of the FA Cup AND finishes at least 6th in the league then maybe 7th place becomes a UEFA Cup spot and 8th Intertoto. In any case I would think at this point 6th place guarantees a UEFA Cup spot and 7th is then maybe the Intertoto, considering the format of the Intertoto this year. So, yeah, if Bolton loses both of their games, 6 points isn't the most difficult lead to catch up to to get 7th.
