I don't see how that's sickening at all. The writer isn't complaining about people born in the country, just naturalised players.

We had exactly the same discussion here regarding Almunia playing for England. Same criticisms of the Irish team in '94.

I'm not saying I agree with the article 100% but he has a point about players being born elsewhere and just adopting a nationality for convenience/opportunity.

EDIT: However, if you do want to see some genuine xenophobia then look no further than the Hitler references in this thread, ffs.

Except most of the players in question were born in Germany or moved here at a very young age. Cacau is the obvious "foreigner", as he came to Germany at the age of 20 or so as a salsa dancer. Klose was born in Poland, but his father is German (under German nationality rules).

Questioning their German-ness is much like questioning the Englishness of Rio Ferdinand, Emile Heskey or Jermaine Pennant.

Hardly. More like debating whether or not Giggs could/should have played for England.

You're trying to turn it into something racial, which it quite clearly isn't.

Article maybe poorly researched or use bad examples but the fundamental point isn't controversial in the slightest.

Which fundamental point is this?

Ryan Giggs could not have played for England.

By the way, you do understand that "race" has nothing to do with where you're born. It's a genetic thing. Polish is no more a race than Mancunian.

It's not going so well for Ballack. Chelsea fucked him off, Lahm doesn't want to give the captaincy back, Müller is wearing his number, and no-one thinks the German team needs him. On top of that, it's just come out that his agent, Michael Becker, was spouting off about some of the German squad being gay, and apparently also "half-gay", whatever that is.

Arjen Robben has been ruled out for the next 2 months with an injury. Can see Bayern struggling at the start of the Bundesliga even more now considering they had so many (13) players at the World Cup till the end.

Will make the Bundesliga more exciting with Schalke, Hamburg and Leverkusen all stronger than last season.

Robben back to his usual injury prone self. Pity. Was thinking he was starting to get that past him after last season.

He played at the World Cup despite having an injury/not being fit. Don't think it's his fault this time.

Look at Westfalenstadium sudtribune:

http://www.fussballtempel.net/uefa/GER/Westfalenstadion8.jpg

Terraces. The secret to amazing support and atmosphere.

and to quote the article:

In the wake of Hillsborough the German authorities considered following the English model of all-seater stadia but the objections of fans were listened to.

Would be interesting to see if they'd have done that had 96 fans died in a German terraced stadium.

Looking at that picture there seems no danger at all. Looks very spacious and big enough exits to get people out of need be.

I went to Hillsborough on boxing day and the place is f***ing awful. Its falling to bits and still a deathtrap. I was in the upper tier and the concourse is ridiculously small. People cant get out the back of the stand quick enough after the game because the the crappy stairwell isn't wide enough.  I don't think the problem is terracing, the problem is how the stadiums are designed.

any opinion on Lewis Holtby?

English father but plays for Germany U-21's (English FA knew nowt about him)....doing well on loan at Mainz.

Heard he's got family from Newcastle and travels here now and again to visit...........might be worth a punt in the summer if our scouts know anything. Certainly looks a very good prospect.

Saw Mainz play in December.

Player who caught the eye was a Adam Szalai 22 year old 6'4" Hungarian centre forward - mobile and notched a couple but this is his first season in top league. Was interesting Liverpool but they went for someone else apparently.

Checked programme and Holtby was playing - wish I'd taken more notice.

Only at St.Pauli  :celb:

German side St Pauli have asked the owners of one of their executive boxes to stop strippers performing during games after they installed a pole and mirror. "They can do what they like after games," said club president Stefan Orth. (Observer)

Well, if the side played more interesting football, it wouldn't be an issue.

Was rumoured they were doing "specials" every time St.Pauli scored !

I've followed FC. Koln for a few years now.

...can't accuse me of being a gloryhunter like

Thing is anyone could be accused of being a gloryhunter in the Bundesliga. Only league I feel at the start of the season anyone can win it.

Watch BvB dick Wolfsburg at the weekend. They play some really good stuff. So many young players, hope they can keep them all for next years Champions League. Nuri in particularly stood out for me.

Agree with Chris though, really competitive league (despite BvB being lightyears top), so many different teams always challenge for the league. Always full grounds, big attendances and good atmospheres too - top stuff.

Best league in Europe for me, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Its how a football league should be. Open, attractive, great atmosphere and built around the fans.

Was about to say this. Good quality of football, too. Absolutely pisses all over the sterile commercialism of the Premier League. Really wish we had a league like the Bundesliga.
