Bad idea.

A forum is for everyone to post on and as long certain guidlines are followed then what's the problem? The whole point of having mods/admin is to keep things tidy/within the law/bounds of decency.

I agree with that, total stupid idea and its the mods and admins problem to sort out duplicate threads

Also, you're probs giving yourselves a bigger job by checking whether people have posted shite or not

If a thread is a duplicate and not worth a reply with better threads existing it will wander down the page quickly. So basically a forum mostly moderates itself

If only that were true.  Like, even in the slightest bit.

In my experience it is, and I have moderated forums myself.

And like it or not, but one of the best administrated football forum on the internet imho is the smb where they don't make that much of fuzz about all these things.

Tbh, I was there today getting some dirt for a hate campaign against my colleague, and I thought it was a load of crap. Well organised, like.

Funny how nearly all the people complaining about this so far will not be affected one bit. Strange, that.

Just for clarity on the 'it moderates itself' comment, in the year from the beginning of May 2006 the forum on average:

Has had 43 new topics per day.

Has had 1324 posts per day.

Has had 7 new members per day.

It needs a lot of moderating, and anything that helps us needs to be looked at.

Edited to take into account the 10 days of May left.

The mackems don't do much right but the smb is usually top drawer like.

All I can say is, in my experience it's the opposite. When we don't moderate this place, all we do is get told how fucking shite it is.

Tell me, why don't you post here, Isegrim? Is it cause you think it's shite here?

We're taking steps to improve the place, stop pretending there's some control freak scenario to it. Half the forum were calling for Thread Moderation to be back days ago.  Maybe they could see we needed things, cause they're here and know what the forum is like.  Unlike yourself.

so why exactly was the longest thread topic deleted? surely in general chat that should be allowed.

i personally think there is too much moderation on this forum, i get fed up of having to trawl through pages to find what i want as threads have been merged.

why not just have one thread for big sam and one for each player and keep them going all season and allow nobody to start a new thread no matter what happens, thats the way it seems to be going sometimes.

fair enough there were quite a few threads relating to allardyce over the last few weeks but some of them were totally unrelated yet still get merged.

anyway i've only got 50 posts so probably not even entitled to an opinion, although i have been a member since 2005.

I post little as I have actually a job to do (and I'm not Gemmill) and restrict myself to other forums where, yes, I like it more (I wouldn't say it's just because I think it's s*** here). I still flick through threads here but only make contributions when I think maybe a view from an outsider (normally when people refer to Jorman football) might be needed. But with only being online here rarely I mostly judge the threads by looking at the last poster. I probably miss loads of interesting threads because I don't like the one who replied last, because you often know how the discussion is going just by looking at the names. That's also one of the reasons why I think it isn't that bad when similar topics are discussed in various threads. I rather would scroll down the site with a wheel mouse than click myself through multiple pages threads to see if anyone posted something interesting.

i just dont see what is achieved by locking that thread, anyone reading it knows what to expect before they look, it was always goin to be some light hearted banter about not a lot. so why lock that thread?

i have to agree with this, i much prefer to scroll down the main page to find what i want to read rather than trawl through loads of stuff that is irrelevant or i have already read.

This doesn't really effect me as I have above the neccesary amount of posts but it seems to me a better way of managing the whole thing would to be to increase the number of global moderators and moderators.

To be fair while their are some idiots who post crap I would say the majority of new users post sensibly and their new threads are usually good.

Each to their own but today's topics on the SMB go back 8 pages. I can't see how I'd get any enjoyment personally, the threads go up faster than you can read them. Not trying to slag it off or anything, just how I see it.

It's a fair enough outlook. Having various threads on one subject, or allowing rather, and using the one you like. Fact is though, we get moaned at to merge all the threads, delete stupid threads etc. People don't seem to like the chat split, can get quite clique-ish. We need to meet the requests of the members, on the whole.

I agree with stozo on the mods and global mods, started to do that actually.

I've been part of this board for about 2 and a half years. I liked it then and i've never stopped liking it. The only problem i have is that there is far too much bikering. Not arguing and general constructive critisism but bitchiness.

There is also too many people who make negative comments in order to be seen to be negative. Most of the time it probably isn't even there opinion, they just want to sound like some sort of loyalist.

I agree with the action that has been taken.

i would have to agree with you about all the bickering and bitching, that one of themain reason i dont post often despite visiting the board every day. however i dont see how the action taken will help as its the same people, mainly regulars who just use the board to argue and wind each other up and spoil the majority of threads.

this action won't affect them, they will always get away with it. friends with admin probably.

Only read the opening post so apologies if i'm repeating anything.

Don't think it's an overly bad idea, but people can get to 100 posts quite quickly and i can't help but think that if the mongs know that this is the case, they'll do whatever they can to get their post count up. And i'm surprised the mods/admins are in favour of this idea over Thread Moderation - which would be a lot more efficient.

Regardless of who is posting the threads, there'll always be mong threads.

But i agree that something needs to be done.

There are those who seem to have sway with the mods but i'd say most of those have been generally good posters and have earned that right. There are some who probably don't derserve the right to make threads but it aint for me to make that judgement.

Hopefully that will be noted, though.

Why do you have to even mention that? Oh dear. We'll be killed. ;)
