LIVERPOOL boss Rafa Benitez has rejected the chance to give England striker Michael Owen an Anfield return.

Newcastle were prepared to trade Owen for two Liverpool players – striker Craig Bellamy and left-back John Arne Riise.

But Benitez ruled out a deal for Owen, which would also have taken Bellamy back to Tyneside.

However, Owen could still be on the move – with  Manchester City and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger also interested in the 27-year-old striker.

NEWCASTLE

In: M Viduka (Middlesbrough) free; J Barton (Man City) €8.6m.

Out: T Bramble (Wigan) free; A Sibierski (Wigan) free; S Parker (West Ham) €10m; C Moore, free; O Bernard, free; P Srnicek, free.

Big Issue: Even if we spent €75m would we ever win a trophy? Doubling it might not even be enough to break the curse. Remember, only one non top-four team has won a trophy in the past five seasons (Middlesbrough fly the flag for the rest with a solitary Carling Cup).

The gossip: Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins have release clauses in their contracts and the latter could soon be off to Juventus for €19m. Alan Smith could be coming in and Big Sam's quest for some decent defenders has led him to Luke Young, Khalid Boulahrouz and David Rozehnal, with the latter's agent yesterday claiming an agreement is in place. Reports in France, meanwhile, claim Allardyce is also ready to rival Portsmouth for Lyon's Alou Diarra.

Other clubs can be seen at http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/the-ins-and-outs-the-big-questions-and-all-the-gossip-742629.html

Alves wouldnt be able to move to the EPL unless he has an EU passport. He's not a regular Brazilian international so wouldnt qualify for the work permit

That Bellamy + Riise for Owen deal would be fantastic, probably bollocks though of course.

True statements .... but I don't want Bellamy back - rotten to the core imo

Good stuff from Allardyce though if it's true. His way of telling him if he doesn't want to play for us, we'll replace him and he's not as important as he thinks.

It would make a lot more sense if we went for Riise and Cisse in my opinion. I would have Cisse over Bellamy.

Cisse will score more goals if he is played up front with another striker who is a target man (i.e. Viduka), and not on the wing as he was played at Liverpool.
