Could have been worse. Here's one they made earlier:

It's a ready made shopping mall when they get bored and sell up.

I can see hardly any concrete there which is a good thing, the bottom half of the Emirates and Wembley are basically just a massive block of characterless concrete.

And you think this thing has character?

As a couple have already mentioned it looks like a college library.

It's got more than a plain concrete bowl that's for sure.

That looks steep as owt! No way can that be safe? ???

You should be quite aware now Spectrum that the correlation between Liverpool fans and stadium safety is known to be that of the non existent nature.

There's looking unique & different and there's looking s***.

I agree. What is it with people who think that just because something looks different, it's automatically better than what has gone before? Here's Liverpool's previous stadium design. Which would you want your team to play in?

I don't think there's anything wrong with concrete or a bowl, character can be subtle as well as overt.

Bayern Munich's new stadium is a bowl but it's unique and looks amazing. The Bernabeu is a concrete bowl but has plenty of character and looks very intimidating when you're up close. Everything about it is 'Real Madrid', the location, the surroundings, it's very imposing. I wouldn't change anything about it, I certainly wouldn't replace the concrete with glass and what-not. The San Siro is another example, a very unique stadium instantly identifiable by any football fan as 'the home of Milan'. These are brilliant stadiums which have achieved international recognition, and many are all concrete with a fairly similar shape, yet each is very distinguishable from the other. If we ever moved into a new ground I'd much rather have something like the San Siro than a college library.

That got rejected by Heritage groups who didn't like the brickwork.

The basic design stayed the same though, think they just changed the brick to cladding

The new one is better imo. At least it's different. The original reminds me of a bigger Reebok Stadium

Previous plans were already approved. They were only re-submitted because the American owners decided to start again.

The pic you posted was of the 55000 stadium back in 2001 and wasn't applied for. In the end the cladding was changed totally (at the request of English Heritage who preferred a more modern look to the brick facia), mast structure holding the roof changed to single taller masts in each corner and corners filled in to take the capacity to 61000:

Looks good inside but rubbish outside. It's certainly not a boring shape, but it ain't an attractive one either.

The main alterations the new owners made were to make the stadium expandable up to 80K. The earlier design was stuck at 61K.

A major obstacle to getting planning permission for 80K is that we'd need a rail link. There is a good line that runs by the new stadium, so we'd mostly just have to stump up for a new station.

going to be even closer to Goodison!

if its the older design then it will be very nice

but the new design that looks like a shopping centre sort of thing looks horrible

we will just have to wait and see what they build

I like that, they leave the corners free so its future proof in terms of expanding, if they are reducing they should keep the same concept.

I don't see anything wrong with their new stadium design. Well, it's modern and futuristic, which is good.

Looking through the list of future stadiums here --> http://www.worldstadiums.com/stadium_menu/past_future/future_stadiums.shtml, these look impressive too:
