Guest DavB93
WTF.. Smith is fcking shite. Big Sam is clearly not right in the head if he thinks we need him.. We need defenders, every sane person knows that! Aye, there are other sane people that realise that signing Smith doesn't mean we can't sign defenders as well. A concept beyond the grasp of some. Don't know where people are getting that Smith is shite, he is a canny player. Ferguson doesn't sign or player shite players, he would be a good addition to the squad. Geordie Boot Boy
...Bellion!!!! That one really took the cake for me. He actually went to the bother of tapping up a player that wasn't even starting regularly for a team that went down that season as the worst top flight side since the start of the Premiership! thomas
Does smith bring anything to the table other than high workrate and sub par finishing? He's the forward version of Scott Parker ffs.

James
Djembax2 Was the next best thing when signed Kleberson Brilliant at World Cup. Other top managers wanted him Fletcher Academy graduate that is good enough to play against most teams Tiabi Howard Excellent for Everton Silvestre Good enough for anyone outside top 4 Saha Top player, scored loads before injury last season Smith Still good enoughfor most teams Veron So des[pite key performances for several trophy winning big clubs and Argentina, he's shit? Fortune Good enough against most teams May Did ok for them Barthez Consistently amongst the top 20 keepers in the world for years Dong Bought for Chinese $ You have to remember that they are Manchester United, one of the best teams in the world. They play 50+ games a season, and until Chelsea started spending extravagantly, it was perfectly normal for the best club in the country to have players in reserve who could get results against the non-big clubs, which the majority of the above names would have achieved. midds
He's nowhere near as bad as some are making him out to be. It's just ridiculous the way some folk go on about potential signings not being good enough for us. He's no world beater, granted, but he'd be a decent squad player and give us a bit of depth. At first glance the fee seems a little high at £6m but compare it to Chopra and Bent it's about the going rate tbh. Now it looks more and more likely that Dyer is on his way, we'll be one down and he'll need to be replaced. Smith would be an acceptable replacement imo and he'd cost us less in wages. Dokko
Djembax2 Was the next best thing when signed - So what? He was so shite Villa couldn't even play him. rep isn't everything. Kleberson Brilliant at World Cup. Other top managers wanted him - No one wanted to pay the £6m though. rep isn't everything. Fletcher Academy graduate that is good enough to play against most teams - No he's not Tiabi Howard Excellent for Everton Not for Manu Silvestre Good enough for anyone outside top 4 I'd die if we signed him, Bramble at LB Saha Top player, scored loads before injury last season - Fair enough, it was harsh but so was the fee. Smith Still good enoughfor most teams Has no real position Veron So des[pite key performances for several trophy winning big clubs and Argentina, he's shit? - At near enough £30m, he was shite. rep isn't everything. Fortune Good enough against most teams - Crap player, injured forever May Did ok for them - Was the weak link, ask any manu fan. Barthez Consistently amongst the top 20 keepers in the world for years - consistently making howlers. Short memory. rep isn't everything. Dong Bought for Chinese $ - That makes him a good player? You have to remember that they are Manchester United, one of the best teams in the world. Aye, a fair assessment. And I agree about the way people go on about the players that might come here. We are a mediocre trophyless club with a nice stadium and good attendances, with no European competition to offer. All of this seems lost on a good chunk of our fans though. So how would spending £6m or whatever on a player who wouldn't improve us be any use at all?

Best post of the whole thread tbh. Some people on here want their heads checking. Not saying that Smith is a bad player (quite like him as it happens), its just that the £6m could be better used elsewhere. Zoggy would be a better replacement for Dyer, leaving £6m for a centre back or dare i say it a left back even. So good player, but not what we need
Guest
I am saying Smith is a bad player imo. Offers nothing apart from running around a lot. Not a great tackler, and if you're to play him in midfield, the amount of free-kicks we'll give away in silly areas could be ridiculous. Was poor at Leeds, hasn't improved at Man Utd, he's a nothing player. If anything, a worse version of Heskey.
