The 30-year-old full-back is determined to cement his place in the Magpies starting eleven having featured in all but one of the Geordies' six friendly fixtures. And, after a campaign last year disrupted by injury, the Irish international is feeling the benefit of Big Sam's meticulous conditioning methods as he heads into his fourth season at Gallowgate. "I felt not bad last season either until I got injured, but I feel as good as I've ever been now," Stephen told Newcastle World TV in an exclusive interview. "I have got a good few games under my belt and I'm raring to go. "I will do my best and hopefully that's good enough for the manager. "Pre-season has been excellent, probably the best I've known and each individual has had a programme tailored for them. "I've been very impressed and I know all the lads are feeling good going into the new season." Carr has been something of an elder statesman in the Toon backline during pre-season, but says he is more than happy to lend a hand to the younger players. "I had it myself when I was growing up and I think you need help as a young player, especially against opposition of that quality such as Juventus." added the former Spurs star. I am at the the 'think we still need a new RB but willing to give him another opportunity to prove himself after pre-season paerformances' stage. Carr is playing the best football of his NUFC tenure at the moment and long may this continue. He is snapping into tackles, looks fitter/quicker/stronger than in any other season and most suprisingly has improved his distribution from 'poor' to 'satisfactory'. Carr's put in a few good shift's in pre-season, mostly against half fit players, he's by far the team's weak link and we either need to bring in a decent rb or put Nobby in there. I have to admit that I haven't seen any preseason games but after watching years of shite fom the bloke I've got no confidence that he will ever be able to perform at an acceptable area in the premier league. The evidence that we have available clearly suggests he is our weakest like. I hope he proves me wrong and shows the attitude and ability that have been so lacking in his past seasons with us but I severly doubt this will be the case. If so, I'll agree with you when he tames the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, or Gamst Pedersen, players of this class. I think he deserves praise for a good pre-season, but I am very doubtful he'll be able to stay injury free for long, regardless of how long his form holds up. First off, it wasn't a reserve Sampdoria side or a weak Celtic side and he did actually put in decent performances against decent teams. Problem is, these are pre-season matches where not everyone is playing at full pelt. Also, how many right backs out there can "tame" Cristiano Ronaldo? Seems fitter than ever, played well at the back end of last season (even out of position), and has performed well during pre-season. Sam's said nowt about a right-back, so I can only assume he likes the look of him as well. Still to go into the season with Carr as our only specialist right-back would not be optimal. Best would be to bring in a taller, younger and hungry right back to compete with him for the spot and to have as backup if either is injured. Great credit to Sam if he gets Carr working which atleast is looking like a possibility from seeing him in the pre season. He can only beat whats in front of him and has done well so far.
