NSG, didn't you go wumming on the Spurs board when we beat them to Parker and then Duff - and possibly even the Liverpool one when we signed Owen?

Apologies if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember you doing that. Bearing in mind the subsequent performances of those players, don't you think you should learn to let the players do their talking/not do it before gloating about it on other fans' forums?

You are wrong.

The only WUMing I did was on he Villa board telling them they'd signed Bramble on a 5 year deal. That's about it.

Also, save this for PMs if you have a problem with me.

A problem? Don't flatter yourself. If you're going to put links to you going on other club's messageboards winding them up, you've got to be prepared to take criticism for it. You've definitely 100% done it before, so what you just said was bollocks.

I don't care, just trying to stop you from looking a twat when deals don't turn out like you think they might.

I've just returned from a signing session with the players (Junior Magpies treat for the young 'uns) I can confirm that West Ham player Kieran Dyer was not there. Everyone else was (save for Sam who we must hope was doing business) including Nobby. Enrique was chatting with Luque & the French speakers were also together. Owen was next to Barton, Milner & Smith. For some reason Viduka was right at the end beyond the the French connection & Shola had a bloody stupid wide brimmed hat on.

Cliques?

Aye Shola loves daft hats. he's got a massive collection and there "very important to him" or something according to his slot on footballers cribs.

He was getting funny looks from some of the kids. Fair play to the players; there was a long line of kids & only a couple of players looked fed up & they were the younger ones.

Good to hear mate, I went to one of them when I was about fifteen just after Bobby took over. Got me shirt signed and waited outside after it finished abd got pictures with legends like big dunc, maric, marcelino, steve howey... Got Shay and Speed as well though.

Best bit was Stevie Harper and Gary Speed ripping it out of me mate for having old macdonald as his ring tone.

I actually reckon Dyer will be a decent signing for them if he stays fit. That's a big IF, but I rate his chances of staying fit higher than I did, say, 12 months ago.

I'm not too fussed at losing him and while I'd be gutted at losing Solano, I could handle that one too, provided a quality right-sided replacement comes in. Without those two we'll just have Milner, and Geremi if we shift him across, leaving our wide right options for a 4-4-2 pretty limited indeed. With Duff crocked for another three months on the left hand side, we only have Zoggy there too, so an injury to him would leave us switching Milner across (or Luque, if he stays). And Carr is our only natural right back and quite injury prone, so we may need to play someone like Geremi there, further robbing us of right wing options. I think it'll be addressed, but I can't say I'm happy about this until it is. Losing two quality players this late in a transfer window is never ideal, and we will probably be a bit ripped off as we try to replace them. No club wants to sell good players in the last two weeks of August, they're buggered finding a replacement, not to mention time is running out for ourselves.

Roze was outside getting his photo taken. We bumped into Beardsley getting into his car, so he signed our flag & asked how the players had behaved.

The Duke looked like he may keep himself to himself.

While we need another body in midfield imo, Smith and Barton can and have played wide-right on many occasions.

Yep. Its all well and good coming out with the vitriol but we need to replace both players. At present all of our central midfielders are either similar or erratic (Emre). There is no pace at all. Out wide we will have two kids who can't be rated as anything other than average at present, despite the love-in that might come there way. Certainly we have nobody in the same league as Robert, Ginola or Waddle. Or Solano in his first stint for that matter. At present we don't have anyone to match Keith Gillespie in his 1994/1995 or 1995/1996 form either. It'll be hard to get that standard in but it's what we should aspire to. To be fair Zog has a chance of reaching it if he keeps his head screwed on.

I see what you're getting at, it's not the end of the world if we had to play Smith there for a game or two, but the idea is hopefully to be stronger after selling Dyer & Solano than we were before and I'm not sure that'll happen. I accept that the wage bill needs to be reduced and I think one solution might be a player like Belletti, a right back who, in emergencies (if say Geremi and Milner are crocked) can go right wing and still give us width and the option of playing 4-4-2.

I think, if we get a RB and the Faye deal is completed, we still need another midfielder at least. Either one with vision or one with pace. Both would be ideal. Not easy at this stage of the window but I have faith in Allardyce. I think we're strong enough to only sign players who are good enough though meaning we hang on until Jan or even next summer, rather than panic buying, if you see what I mean.

Best way to manage the wage bill long term is to buy what you need. We need specialist(s) out wide who are better than we currently have. Certainly that is the case on the right. Belletti might be able to do it but I'd prefer Sam bought players comfortable in their own position.

We were still in the hunt for a specialist RB anyway and I can't imagine Big Sam will let Nobby leave without a replacement incoming for him.

Way I see it is this: Martins/Milner can play RWF to a high standard (or whatever it's official title is) when we play 4-5-1/4-3-3, we also have Geremi and Smith who could play there, at a push. If it's a 4-4-2 then there's still Geremi and Milner who can play there, at the least.

Because of the sort of players Allardyce has already brought in, we're better covered in absolutely every area of the park to an acceptable degree even if Solano isn't directly replaced. It would be ideal if he was, though, and we got Faye as well.

I still think there's time, but like OML says we might have to pay a bit over the odds because of how late in the day it is.

Dyer has already been replaced, as well, if you ask me - so we're only really losing 1 quality player as it stands.

I know it's easy to forget him, but Damien Duff is still here (although I appreciate that it's another 3 months before he's playing again) and we haven't seen anything of Emre or Barton yet, either, we do actually have tonnes of players who can play in all of the midfield positions as well. Enrique left-midfield, Rozehnal defensive midfield, as two brief examples.

As far as I can see if Faye comes in we'd have 2 players for every position, plus Luque (who might be leaving, yet). Krul and Carroll are out on loan and Edgar and Huntington are arguably too young. So we still have 23 "senior" players on the books, not taking injuries into account. People might argue that having Babayaro instantly drops us to 22, for example

If Luque goes we most certainly need another player in, but as far as I can see even before Nobby wanted to leave we were after Faye plus another, so I have faith that we'll be alright.

I think those who talk about pace have a fair point, I don't think we have any genuine pace down that right hand side, and weaker teams who come to sit back and frustrate us will be happy about that. We've got enough senior players to fill any holes that appear but in terms of changing a game it is usually forwards and wingers that you look to and wide right I don't see a lot. We look stable enough to handle injuries this time around, but in terms of teams looking at our bench going "sh*t" I think it's only up front that we have those kind of options.

I think we need a winger with pace, a right back, and a centre back. If the wage bill really is a problem, then someone like Belletti could act as a compromise, with Faye coming in and covering midfield and defence. In other words, I'd be happy enough with Faye and Belletti coming in for Dyer and Solano. Ideally though a quick, specialist right winger would give us an alternative to Milner without having to shuffle things around.

Most definitely agree with what people are saying as well. I think we'll still be fine without this "explosive option" coming in to replace Solano (who might not even be leaving, apparently), but if we could get someone that fits the bill then we'd look all the more dangerous for it.

Faye, a RB and a Solano replacement of the sort mentioned (if he goes) and I'm dancing.

Even if Solano stays and we get Faye and a quality RB, I'll still do a jig.

Agree that the squad is now missing something in midfield. Everything now looks much more solid, but we need a touch of sparkle, pace and creativity.

Sparkle and creativity??? Surely you're not suggesting we've lost these due to Dire's departure!

I'm ecstatic and relieved that the waster is out of my club!

Things just keep getting better and better under Big Sam.

What if we keep the little Peruvian trumpet tooter? Still pleased enough?

like him or not, dyer was our second top scorer last year and has menacing pace to boot. ok so he never did anything with the ball, his shear pace was a factor and on some days (i know i know..) looked decent. although he's a giant waster we need someone with his pace but with more drive, and that actually gives a toss.

not sure but which players do you think fit the bill?

Nope. We need better than him or Milner on the right.

Bloody hell. Hard to please. Martins is in the process of making that sort of position his own, if you ask me, and I'm really not sure how much we'll play 4-4-2 this season. It's a difficult one, but I personally think Geremi/Solano/Milner as right-midfield options in a 4-4-2 is as good as we've had there for years, if we ever require it.

Shaun Wright Phillips would do me, but I doubt Chelski would sell now.

yeh and not for anything less than 10 million.. if we'r lucky.. with prices these days he could be be worth up to 15.

g. barnes anybody? Might be overpriced now but he's got pace, he's young and in a couple of seasons we'll be laughing.

he looks to be shaping into a class player.. methinks its now at 5 mil or next year at 8 mil+

Barnes would be an ideal signing, but will he pass a medical with a fractured metatarsal?
