If we don't get Enrique or Baines...

...Nicky Shorey looks like he's back on the market. He's still got 2 years left on his contract but his refusal to sign an extended deal is likely, in my opinion, to attract a bid or 2. Wouldn't be surprised to see the Mackems put a bid in actually. I think any Newcastle interest will depend upon what happens with Enrique when he's flies in to discuss personal terms.

Reading boss Steve Coppell has revealed Nicky Shorey has declined the chance to extend his contract.

The Royals have been holding talks with Shorey in a bid to tie him down to a new long-term deal to ward off interest from rival clubs.

The likes of West Ham and Newcastle have been credited with an interest in Shorey following his impressive season in the Premier League last term.

Shorey, who still has two years to run on his current contract, has turned down the chance to extend his deal as he wants to keep his options open.

Coppell is not worried about the contract situation of Shorey and team-mate Leroy Lita, who has been in discussions over a new deal.

Unconcerned

"Nicky Shorey is going to stick with his current situation and there are no new contracts imminent," said Coppell.

"Both have two years left so it is not of immediate concern to us. We are realistic about the situation."

Additions

Coppell also revealed that he may make one final foray into the transfer market with Glenn Little struggling with the Achilles problem.

"I'm not anticipating making any more signings but we have been in the situation throughout the summer that if someone became available that we liked then we would do something about it," added Coppell.

Enrique as a left winger/left back I think, then I reckon we'll sign Baines next week as well

Its all about the squad, having players with the quality to step into posistions when injuries and suspensions come round. So if our LB is out we have a competent player who can step in to do the job.  This had to be thinking when we signed Smith, a player with good ability who can fill a number of different posistions.

Also allows us greater flexibilty to change things round in terms of tactics/line ups when things don't quite go to plan.

Wouldn't turn my nose up if we didnt get the other 2 but I have my worries about Shorey.

Agree with that, I'd be happy with Shorey as a last resort but I don't think he's all that good if I'm being honest. Prefer someone younger... spicier.

Posted this in the other thread but it's better off here.

Be shocked if we're after Enrique and Baines, it'll be one or the other surely?

Both seem very similiar, good young prospects at LB. I'm not much of a fan of rotation when it comes to your defence so I'd prefer we just chose one and went with him. We'll have Dragutinovic for depth, hopefully, and then Babayaro as 3rd choice.

As for playing Enrique on the left of midfield, don't see that happening. Firstly, we'll probably play 4-3-3 a fair bit next year. Secondly, we have N'Zogbia and eventually Duff to play hat role. Milner as well is an option.

Spend the money on a similiar RB instead, we'd be f****** laughing then.

If the mackems put in a bid for Shorey I really can't see him going to them, because unless he's had some kind of falling out with people at Reading then the only reason he's gonna reject a new contract offer is because he feels he wants to play for a bigger club, and Sunderland are in pretty much the same situation, if not worse than Reading at this point in time.

Unless of course he's a greedy bastard and wants more money!
