Rocker
One of the reasons we kept a clean sheet again yesterday, imo. Both offer extra protection on the full-backs, and both track back constantly, and are very rarely guilty of ball watching. Definatly one of the reasons Sam's shifted Nobby back to right wing, as we're essentially playing with two sets of full backs at times, soaking up pressure, and bombing forward of the break ( even Carr has impressed going forward pre-season). Surely the way we're planning to play, away from home, at least. Very dificult to play against.
Baggio
Far too slow in getting up and down the pitch, I hope we don't see it again this season.
MyPalAl
Agreed, Carr and Nobby work well as a pairing, and have a good understanding. I cant believe I am saying this, but I have been impessed with Carr this pre-season, it has been like we have signed a new player! I have always thought he was a tosser, but I am starting to feel a bit more confident in him now.

Guest alex
I'd probably go for Milner and N'Zogbia if we're going 4-4-2.
Baggio
Far too slow in getting up and down the pitch, I hope we don't see it again this season. How would you like us to play? We've got to have pace in the team so we can stretch the opposition, the first half yesterday we didn't look like creating much and I can see it'll be even harder in the Premiership, it's alright having wingers that can drop back in and soak up the pressure but when it comes to springing the counter attack we've got nothing apart from Martins and he can't be expected to be our only outlet. I'm not sure if Milner or Solano done anything that N'Zogbia couldn't do defensively, Allardyce must of told them to defend that way so I can't see why he can't have other players doing the same. Mowen
Far too slow in getting up and down the pitch, I hope we don't see it again this season. I agree with the pace issue. One to be used when defending a lead/holding for a draw rather than looking for anything.

I have always thought he was a tosser, but I am starting to feel a bit more confident in him now. I'd probably agree with you, Carr seems to be a different player so far in pre-season, but I'd still be inclined to make him the second choice right back because the mistakes he makes are really costly and we can't afford that this season! The season will be a much harder test than the friendlies, no matter who the opponents were. He may be all out to secure a place right now but once the window closes you never know what his attitude will be! Nobby and Milner have been fantastic and have really come through for the black and white in recent seasons. I was so pleased when we managed to pulled Milner back from almost signing with Villa. They are fantastic crossers of the ball and defend well too. Versatility is extremely important in the Newcastle squad, more now than ever and I am so pleased we have a vast number of players, like Milner and Nobby who can offer us more than one position! Yes, we do lack pace in the flanks, but rotations can sort that probably out and Sam seems to have a good tactical mind... I have faith!
Shak
Agree with Baggio, not enough pace. If we're going 4-4-2 I'd have N'Zogbia LW every time. I've got my heart set on a 4-3-3 at this point though.

Tisd09
There seems to be a big improvement in Carr this pre-season because he was such toss last season. He is not the greatest player to ever pull on a Toon shirt but he is definately not the worse, hopefully he can have a Butt type recovery to his Newcastle career. It is not as if the transfer market is saturated with right backs either.

Mick
I'm not sure the lack of pace was down to the wingers, I thought it had more to do with Martins not being on the field and the wingers not being able to play early balls.

Again, I'm sure that's because who played in the 4-4-2, not the system itself.
Skirge
Fact is we need a RB, then it will be Milner RW and Zoggy LW in a 4-4-2. For a 4-3-3 it should be .........(but only at home) ----------------------Given ?------------Roze------------Cacapa----------Enrique ------Smith---------Geremi-----------Barton ----------------------Martins ---------Smith---------------------Viduka
Quailman
Well I haven't actually seen the game yet, need to check Newcastle World when i'm at home, but if the 4-4-2 was directionless yesterday it can be different other days, with different players. The beauty of it is, Big Sam can swap and change whenever he feels necessary and he knows how to close out games. 4-4-2 to 4-4-3 to 5-3-2, whatever he decides he will make the players know those tactics inside out! Can't be because of injury because Barton is in the team. There's no way Martins can play just behind the front two. We have already discussed the fact that his first and second touches are poor and IMO his vision is quite poor too. Dukes in holding role with Owen on left and Martins on right. You've got Smith twice...

Shak
----------------------Given ?------------Roze------------Cacapa----------Enrique ------Milner---------Geremi-----------Barton ----------------------Martins ---------Smith---------------------Viduka You really think Martins in a free role behind the strikers is going to lead to anything positive? More chance of amounting to something out wide in a 4-3-3 IMO. Of course he'll have to learn how to run at full-backs then. It's frustrating at times, cos i've seen so many times here where he could have just knocked the ball by the defender and ran after it and he'd have beaten his man easy. Maybe he doesn't know he's fast, wouldn't rule it out.
