He only ever has a decent game for us when he's played at right back.

Stupid rumour though. There's no way Moyes would sell his captain for a relatively small fee that we don't need.

I thought he was meant to have been smashing for you? Or was that just meejah spin?

Media rubbish really.

He does pretty well at right back to be fair but he's shite in midfield and nothing special at left back either.

I think the line of thinking is that a Man Utd veteran at a non-top 4 club must be one of the best we have.

Allardyce mulls £4m swoop for Everton's Neville

By Michael Walker

Published: 15 August 2007

Sam Allardyce is interested in trying to sign Phil Neville but the Newcastle United manager is understood to be realistic about his chances of doing so.

Neville, the captain of Everton, joined the Goodison Park club two summers ago and signed a five-year contract. At 30, Neville might be expected to cost up to £4m but Everton are not hard-pressed for cash and Neville is not the sort of player who would cause disruption at a club simply to engineer an exit.

No bid has been made by Newcastle but if one does materialise by the end of this transfer window then Everton will have to inform the player and the situation could develop.

Allardyce is still trying to buy defenders and versatile defensive midfielders and is expected to return to his former club Bolton Wanderers for Abdoulaye Faye. The 29 year-old Senegalese would cost in the region of £2m.

With Michael Owen hoping to be on the bench at least for Newcastle's first home game of the season on Saturday, Allardyce allowed the promising young striker Andy Carroll to join Preston on loan yesterday. Carroll will be at Deepdale until January initially.

Owen came through 60 minutes of a friendly with Newcastle Blue Star on Monday night and Newcastle have arranged another with the SPL side Gretna today as a further test. Owen had two chances cleared off the line and said: "I feel fine, it was only a small injury, a niggle. It had me out for a couple of weeks but I've trained for the last four or five days and I was confident I'd be fine."

Middlesbrough yesterday completed the signing of Mido from Tottenham. The fee is £6m but Mido will not be in Boro's squad for tonight's match at Wigan. The Egyptian has to receive a new work permit and having not undergone a normal pre-season, the manager Gareth Southgate will ease Mido into the season.

Boro pipped Sunderland to Mido's signature and Roy Keane is expected to turn to Andy Cole, his former team-mate at Manchester United. Cole, a free agent, would be one of three new signings Keane hopes to make in the next fortnight.

Some more info?

Newcastle United boss Sam Allardyce still sees Everton defender Phil Neville as his number one target before the transfer window closes.

The Northern Echo are reporting that Everton boss David Moyes is very reluctant to let the player leave, however this is not put off Allardyce who is a big fan of Neville's versatility.

It's believed that Neville is currently unhappy at the level of transfer investment at Everton and big Sam is hoping to capitalise on the situation with a £5 million bid for the player.

At last a chance to sign the most boring player on the planet.

Aye, Sam is stretching his credibility with this one. Phil Fucking Neville?

I am as we speak penning a rather scathing analysis of Big Sam's colonisation of the word 'Big'.
