And where did they deny this? On the news? And if so, give me a link to the interview.

The supposed bid was denied by the two men who were reported to be interested in the club tonight.  Nothing is happening, there is a talk about Everton though.

It took three of them to rehash an article from yesterday?

 Pretty much yeah, they're quick to big up the prospect of yet more change at the club and yet state:

"Another source insisted that talks had been at a preliminary stage and were now terminated"

"Chris Mort, named as Shepherd’s replacement by Ashley, played down the likelihood of any sale, with a Newcastle spokesman insisting: “It’s news to us.”"

Ashley 'to sell' Newcastle share

Simon Burnton

Tuesday August 21, 2007

The Guardian

Just two months after he completed a deal to buy the club, Mike Ashley is rumoured to be considering an offer to sell Newcastle United, with reports in Iceland yesterday suggesting that they could soon become the second Premier League club to fall under Icelandic control.

The daily Morgunsbladid newspaper reported that Jon Asgeir Johannesson and Palmi Haraldsson had already started negotiations with Ashley over a deal to buy "a large share" in the club, with a price of £135m mentioned. Ashley spent £133m to buy the club in June, and invested a further £30m last week to refinance some of Newcastle's £80m debt.

Johannesson is CEO of the Baugur Group, a company that started in 1989 when he and his father opened a supermarket in Reykjavik. He has already bought one British institution, having taken control of the London toy shop Hamleys in a £59m deal four years ago.

In 2004 he bought the Big Food Group whose brands, fittingly, include the supermarket chain Iceland, in a joint deal with Haraldsson's investment vehicle, Fons Eignarhaldsfelag, which usually specialises in property and travel. The two have been friends for over 20 years. Asked about the rumours, Haraldsson was noncommittal. "Newcastle is a great club with a great manager," he said, "and I have been a fan for a long time."

Earlier this month Chris Mort, who took over as Newcastle's chairman in July, insisted that Ashley was not planning a rapid resale. "The plan is to develop [the club] over a lengthy period of time, not turn things around quickly and sell it on again," he said. "We are here for the long term."

West Ham United were bought by a consortium led by the Icelandic banker Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson last year.

The papers are pretty much rewording what the Icelandic reports have already said. One good thing about the rags over here picking it up is that hopefully NUFC will come out with some sort of rebuttal as they did over the Chinese reports.

That's if there's no truth of course, which I hope and pray is the case.

Even if there is some truth in it, it might not make a difference. The Icelanders might acquire some of the ownership, but Mort stay as chairman, or whatever. It might mean extra investment in both playing staff and facilities. Who knows? But it wouldn't necessarily be bad. Like Ashley, these aren't mere speculators, but people who run solid, successful businesses.

Don't think of it as a new upheaval, but a sign that the previous upheaval hasn't quite yet settled down.

im really pleased with mike ashley, i really am, i love the direction hes moved the club and the people hes put in place. However, i have a big fear that he could be our patrik vieira, or thierry henry. I fear he could be linked to a sale every week, which would only unsettle the club more than ever, something we finally thought we had ridden of. So if he is going to sell, let it be now, let it be quick and easy and have people here who are here to stay so that finally for once and for all, we can all look forward with confidence

Damned right. Its the "change is bad" principle that some people bought into that kept Shpeherd (and to a lesser degree the likes of Roeder and Souness) in post for too long.

I remember that it was said at the time that Ashley had got himself a bit of a bargain. There wasn't any real competition from other buyers to drive the price up.  Shepherd's attitude meant that the only way of taking over was to pay cash and railroad things through, and Ashley was the only one who could do that.

It shouldn't then be a surprise if a few other people are making enquiries, just in case Ashley is interested in making a quick buck. There's nothing to suggest that either this or the Chinese story have got past the enquiry stage.

Ermm, the Bauger group aren't exactly in a great financial state.

Shearer linked with Toon bid

Legend linked with takeover talk

Shearer linked with Toon bid

Shearer: Icelandic link

Alan Shearer is being strongly linked with a possible Icelandic led takeover of Newcastle United.

English businessman Mike Ashley only completed his takeover at St James' Park in June - but already the club is being linked with a new boardroom battle.

An Asian-based bid was rumoured to be interested earlier this month - but now an Icelandic consortium is reportedly readying a bid for the Magpies.

Jon Asgeir Johannesson, chief of Baugur - who in recent years have bought iconic British companies such as House of Fraser, Hamleys and Goldsmiths, is reported to be behind the bid.

Johannesson along with Palmi Haraldsson, who runs another Icelandic investment group Thera, are reported to have approached Shearer with a view to becoming involved with the bid.

Icelandic sources are claiming that a potential deal is very much in the offing, but it remains to be seen whether Ashley would be tempted into selling just months after purchasing the club.
