Except for united making their interest public and us not saying a word about our interest in the press? What difference does it make whether you tap-up a player in private, or tap-up a player in public? WE DIDNT TAP BENTLEY UP, is my point mate. Where exactly is this Bentley information comming from? Optimistic you've failed (for the 4th time now i think) to answer the question put forward to you by myself. Until I see evidence of Man Utd talking to Berbatov without permission i'm taking story as Spurs spitting their dummy out that someone wants their best player, has said so in public (which is NOT against the rules) and that he wants to go. Public Statements 8. A statement made publicly by or on behalf of a Club expressing interest in acquiring the registration of a Contract Player or by a Contract Player expressing interest in transferring his registration to another Club (or club) shall in either case be treated as an indirect approach for the purposes of Rules K.3 and K.6. s*** is that the rule? Apologies in which case I didn't know. Even so, that rule is absolutely ridiculous. That rule is unenforcable by law. If there was to be any sort of sanction against the two teams they can just appeal to the legal system. It clearly isn't against the law to tap up another companies employee. I can see this being another Bosman type case. technically it could be enforcable simply by the governing bodies saying you can buy who we want but we will only accept the registrations of those we agree were signed within these rules. think of the salary caps in rugby..you'd think with them being businesses an outside force .ie their codes governing bodies, can dictate to them practises that will affect their performance.

yeah I agree. He was past his best, but did better than Arsprilla. There's been some s**** posted on here in the last 3 or 4 weeks, but that sentence there beats all of it. no, its true. He did better in that season than Arsprilla, apart from 1 game. Unless you are one of these knackers who sit around in clubs and think that 1 game makes somebody a great player. What an absolute load of bollocks My opinion. He was a knacker and a waste of space. 2 League goals from someone supposed to be leading the attack and taking responsibilty should tell you something. Tomasson would have done miles better if he had played alongside Shearer, Ferdinand or Ferguson. BTW, Barnes played up front for some games that season, he showed miles more committment to the team than Arsprilla. He also scored 6 league goals against Arsprilla's 2 was that the season he played 8 league games ? season 96-97, 4 goals in 17 games plus 7 as a sub. 97-98 2 league goals, and 4 CL goals, don't know appearances, did he play more in europe than the league what does that tell you. 6 goals in 2 seasons in the league. Barnes equalled that in 1 season. Stop defending him just because he "entertained" you or whatever. He was s****, he didn't deliver, he was a waste of money. When people talk about NUFC being laughed at, its this sort of mentality that they laugh at. The successful clubs wouldn't entertain such players with such a s**** return, but NUFC fans love it. What a load of s****. Even taking away stats, he did nothing for the team ethic either. a simple yes would have sufficed I said I don't know. What do you think about the rest of the post ? i think he was a better player than you give him credit for but too much time out,too few goals, when he was good he was very good but had too many off days. a signing that didn't work out and i don't blame him for our not winning the title.still think he is a strange choice to have as a most disliked. i also think john barnes owed us nowt and i have a different appreciation of that man following his time here. i continually slagged him off for liverpool, i never really rated him then up here you could see the touch he had and a passion (without the legs) that none too many had at that time.

millwall in the uefa cup not so long......were they a good team ? do it 7 times in a decade and you may have a point does it mean if you play in europe you're a good team. also out of that 7 was 1 through the intertoto and two after finishing 13th ? it basically means that if you finish 13th or thereabouts, then the powers that be at a club like Newcastle ought to be showing the basic ambition to do a whole lot better. But that depends on the standards you set On the other hand, we could lower our standards, and wait for the 52000 crowds to continue paying to watch the expected mediocrity. what ambition..souness-roeder then allardyce/ it's like me letting my 4 year old daughter do the household finances. rank bad decisions! how many times have i said i'd rather keegan with 20 million than those 3 with 50 million....wouldn't you ? Sorry but I'm talking about qualifying for europe 7 times in a decade. You don't do that if you don't have some sort of ambition. Do you think Ashley is showing this ambition ? what ambition was shown by appointing those managers...none and rank bad decsion making if he thought it was. please for fucks sake read on all the posts i've typed on this about what shepherd HAD done...BUT HE WAS TAKING US BACKWARDS oh dear. The board appoint the managers. Not ONE person. The major shareholders simply don't let a single other person make the most important decision on their own. How many times does this need to be said ? The Halls and Shepherd appointed the managers, between 1992 and 2007. That is Keegan, Dalglish, Gullit, Robson, Souness, Roeder and Allardyce. Understand ? And - in my opinion the ex board understood that to reach the champions league positions, that you need to back their managers, and punch the weight of the club with the 2nd biggest [now 3rd] crowd [and the fanbase to go with it] in the country. They had showed they understood this by actuallly capitalising on it. So why would they not have done it again ? As Chez Given says, all you are spouting is blind optimism that Ashley will match it. He's done nothing or even said anything to give you such optimism, and are using personal dislike to taint your judgement. I've said my piece, and sadly the only thing that will change my mind is Ashley himself, if he starts backing his manager and showing he has the desire to succeed. Is this easy enough to understand ? the board/shepherd (semantic and pedantic point)..were they taking us backwards from appointing souness till the day they left ? in my opinion the ex-board hit lucky in getting robson and haven't had a clue ever since falling for the idea of if you throw enough cash at any donkey it'll work. as for blind optimism you'll find my view to be cautious, ashley hasn't backed on the pitch with much cash but he got rid of allardyce and brought in amuch better option. as for previous managers 3(keegan,dalglish and robson) were good decisions. the rest weren't. at that level 50-50 when you are throwing money at it isn't good enough. it's all about the way we were going, not where we'd been. i'm the type who'd think after celebrating a title win...."right how do we improve",ashley has stopped the rot, and yes if we start the season with the squad we have i'll criticise but right now i'd take what we have over what i saw us having under shepherd/the ex board.

We never went anywhere with Hislop given that his display at Blackburn cost us the title. as much as Pav forgetting to cover his near post (ie goalkeeping rule no.1) against Liverpool they were similar keepers. probably why neither one ever made the no.1 spot his own. It's no surprise that not even Sheff Wed wanted Pav when he left us. How he got into a title contending team is beyond me. One of Keegan's biggest mistakes is not replacing him with a quality keeper at the start of 93-94 yeah shaka won prem titles galore

Compared to what? In terms of the level of football at which we are competing, or attempting to compete. Obviously, in terms of the Champions League, we are worse than mediocre. Compared to Blyth Spartans, though, we're pretty good. So not compared to the Premier League then? Au contraire. I said in terms of the level of football at which we are competing -- that certainly includes the Premier League. So competing as an 'average' Premier league side this year and finishing 7th would be a 'mediocre' season? In the period under discussion it was our best finish by some considerable distance -- our only one in the top half of the table -- and it wasn't good enough to qualify for the UEFA. Yep, that's certainly a picture of mediocrity in the post-Bobby years. You said we'd never been better than mediocre and finishing 7th this year would be more than that. You cant have it both ways i'm afraid. My apologies. I read your post too quickly and took it as referring to our 7th place finish under Roeder -- highlight of the last five years. To answer your question properly, I'd say a 7th place finish next season would be good in terms of our recent league placings, but still mediocre in the wider scheme of things. It represents nothing better than the upper end of mid-table. Did you answer the question I asked you earlier ie did you have a season ticket when we were truly mediocre ? A simple yes or no will suffice ? he did answer it .

Also, when we WON the Fairs Cup in 1969, we qualified in the first place by finishing a mediocre 10th. And only finished higher than that 3 times until 1994. Fact. 7th would be an improvemnet...in the way that 4th to 13th in 5 years isn't an improvement. again...no-one denies that shepherd done well and presided over some good times...what i am saying is he stopped doing it, shit decisions lead to us going backwards. i dont care if he had been chairman and we had won 10 league titles off the trot previous to appointing souness, he was taking us backwards.

it was Shaka's place he took to be honest. At the end of the 96-97 season Hislop was no.1 but Pav played the last 2 games due to his illness Was it not last four? Pretty sure he kept 4 clean-sheets out of 4 and it effectively won us 2nd place. Could be wrong. i just remember him playing against Arsenal (A) and Notts Forrest in the last game, but could be wrong. Pav was a player i wanted to like but couldn't because he'd make mistake after mistake and the fans just never seemed to notice re pav......he was in the long tradition of very good nufc shot stoppers who could make saves that'd make you think "not many would have got that". very good coming out to feet and possibly the best keeper at the time with the ball at his feet, important with the recent rule change of the time. his handling and decision making were at times absolutely abysmal to point of 'literally what the hell is he doing?' not denying it

Howey had talent but aye, total sicknote. Kevin Scott was woeful, played for Guisborough Town a few years back and was still bad. howey was very good for about a season but he was like woodgate for injuries. for all scott was a poor player he was first up for any fight and protected his players.....and we got £850,000 off spurs for him.
