SJH wanted Bobby Robson when Keegan left but Doug Hall and Fat Fred persuaded him Dalglish was the better choice. He's not about to tell the Chairman who to appoint after resigning the duty himself. That and SBR turning us down. Dalglish had a thankless task rebuilding the academy and reserves, balls up the first team mind!

Has Swansea playing some really nice football and has had the golden touch there. Would be a bold move if we went for him, if we did I would certainly hope we gave him someone with experience to consult or work with, fair enough he has come up smelling of roses so far but how is he going to cope if we are fighting relegation and morale is low or we go on a long losing streak? People would soon rip him apart. Naturally there are many positives to appointing a young and succesful coach but it can easily be flipped around. We just cant go with Calderwood and Hughton. At the very least we need another experienced coach in the mix. We were short on coaches even with JFK here. Venables was a fine coach, capable of doing a fine job previously. Having turned down the job via The Sun last time round I doubt he'll be offered the job again. I agree - Venables would have done a better job than Kinnear and I DON'T think he would have taken the club down. He has great experience working with foreign players too, and that would be invaluable because he would command respect from them. He IS a good coach and that is something the club desperately needs. He MIGHT take the job if it was offered on, say, a 2 year deal or even 18 months, but I reckon he would have some hard questions for Ashley & Co about signing/choosing players, questions they might not like..! Unless we go for a promising young manager as a long-term appt., we will be lucky to get an experienced manager with Venables' credentials because no-one wants the job. If he has no dealings with money matters and Wise is dealing with the transfers for the most part, he might not be bad, like you say he isnt a bad coach. Its been a long time since he was producing the goods though. He did ok at the smogs but hardly set the world alight, then became known as the worst ever manager of Leeds with a more talented squad than his predecessors had and arguable a more talented squad than we have now. He would be as much as a gamble as anyone though up here. One thing is certain the Newcastle job has no respect for previous success or achievments.

What's that based on? His un-questionably superior club experience and acheivements im guessing. Dont know how they will a) afford his wages or b) how succesfull he will be working on a shoestring budget. He would be a very decent appointment for them though, would be a decent appointment for us too!

Dont know enough about him to debate but I would be suprised if we went for someone outside the top leagues. Ashley already has the majority of fans on his back, the pressure (should JFK go) will be huge for a decent appointment and I think he will be looking for someone big. Someone will take a gamble on him soon enough though if he keeps getting the right results.

Would be happy with Curbs until the end of the season. I think we can do alot better though even now, but waiting until the season ends would be best. Scolari was always going to be a risk, he had been away from club management a long time and lots has changed, I wouldnt turn my nose up at him coming here but it would be nice if he bothered to learn English. Will undoubtedly get linked to alot of Spanish names again. Everything comes down to the test results and what the specialist tells JFK tmrw.
