that’s because (imo) Botman will play the cross field diagonals and 1-2 line breaking forward passes on the ground which are higher %. Schar’s vertical passing is usually over the top into the channels and more speculative.

Felt his usual effective pressing was really off yesterday. They broke thru multiple times because he wasn’t close enough to Xhaka

Hard for us to build long counter attacks without Max and the whole team moving up. Much more effective when we’re pushed up higher, won the ball and begin suffocating the defense with our ball play.

I really do like him, his first half was very bad. He sometimes looks half asleep - he’s nearly unplayable on the left sometimes when he’s breaking with the ball on a counter. Unfortunately we had nobody up there to give him an outlet.

No issue with it, as I said in the other thread. It’s part of the game. We just need to be realistic and grown up about it happening to us and/or stoppage time being longer than allotted if we’re laying down in stoppage time.

Over time I assume he will become even more assertive and confident on the ball (like Schar is right now) as sometimes I feel he can get a tad bit timid. I assume as he grows in age, experience and confidence he’ll carry it more because he’s more than capable of it.

Couldn’t give a shit about the time wasting any teams do - whether it takes the sting out of the game or not. My issue is only that the teams who do it (us included) need to realize that stoppage time will be longer than usual, and if we/they employ that tactic in stoppage time the ref could add more time on like done at Liverpool. (I’ve no clue if adding time in stoppage time at ref’s discretion is within the rules or not.)

I think what we saw last night is that we need to have Bruno as an 8 against these type of teams with a real mobile / strong holding midfielder taking that position. Against lesser sides Bruno is fine there. Alternatively having another high quality midfielder who can play the ball is crucial for us. Willock and Longstaff are good in their roles but are not the best in controlling the game through passing.
