Interesting, but I could see that becoming pretty perverse. An Mbappe would eventually negotiate the number down to 1 with subsequent matches being subject to additional negotiation. End of season title chases would be complex games of contract enforcement and haggling. Seems a pretty likely outcome, actually.

You could be right, but I don't think it's right to assume the PSR situation was seen as a disgrace internally. I think it was a product of taking calculated risks, which nearly/sort of didn't come off, but if all the stakeholders were aware of those risks and signed off on them going into it, then there wouldn't be any need for recriminations, if they're being mature. Speculate to accumulate will pick you up some bruises along the way.

Does make me wonder if this was a factor in Freedman getting cold feet about the job. Which would be understandable, even if everything is fine and going to plan.

Perhaps the interview was delayed with this in mind? With a bit of discussion around the structure going forward. I trust he'd have been aware of it before joining the club...

Yeah, that's my understanding, too. E.g. if his £45m was now down to £30m, a new 5 year contract would re-spread the £30m over the next 5 years i.e. from now on, £6m per year being deducted from our PSR 'allowance'.

Bit late to give my opinion, but Mitchell looks like a very solid hire, by the way. I haven't got a strong view on it, but he's genuinely experienced, internationally travelled and has a record of significant success. You can't really argue with the board's choice, so pretty much whatever happens in the future, well done to them for making a strong move to push the club forward

Howe categorically spoke about following Gordon for a long time. I think I remember Ashworth making a remark, but my recollection is it seemed to refer more to how long the deal took to conclude. I don't remember anyone giving Ashworth giving credit for signing Gordon at the time. In fact, it would've been blame, given how it was seen at the time... Meanwhile, the documentary seemed to put Staveley front and centre in terms of negotiating the deal.
