I think the comparisons to Roeder are unfair. When Roeder was appointed after his good spell as caretaker, there were still many reasons to be sceptical. He wasn't exactly an unknown. He had lots of experience as a manager, and all of it ended in failure. He spent his entire career fighting relegation, most of the time unsuccessfully. I will admit that I was one of those who thought he should have been given the chance, but we really should have seen it coming. I don't think you can say that about Hughton. If he fails as a Premiership manager, the only thing you can point to are a few games as ringleader of the circus after Keegan & Kinnear, and some questionable team selection during what might be a title winning season. And his general lack of experience, which isn't necessarily a negative.

Of our remaining away games, only the next one is against a team in the top ten. And a few of them are against teams that might actually be bad enough to get relegated from this league. There is no excuse. If the players have some psychological problem performing away from home, then they need address it now because it could get much harder and more costly next year.

Are there any smaller clubs still in contention for a European title this year? No Hoffenheim surprises anywhere on the continent? Just been browsing the European tables and the extent of the domination from the same 5-8 teams is genuinely boring. Especially in Spain.

Like Everton last year. Can't complain about the same clubs winning everything when somebody else does get a chance they waste it. I agree. The sense of entitlement that comes with always being successful is irritating, but complaining about it is pointless and pathetic. I agree with that. I suspect there are only a handful of managers in the Premiership who would be likely to succeed wherever they went. A very small and talented elite. And I doubt we are capable of attracting one of them. I would certainly not preemptively sack Hughton for some journeyman manager who happens to have more experience in being mediocre in the Premiership than Hughton does. And I wouldn't sack him for someone without that experience either. It isn't worth the risk involved in potentially destabilizing the club and unsettling the players that seem to have his confidence. Without a billionaire to speed things up, then consistency is your best path to success. I've noticed a strong correlation between success on the pitch and not replacing your manager four times in one season.

The only clubs that are too good to go down are the ones in the top 6 or 7 of the Premiership. Those are the only ones with a monopoly of talent to make it inconceivable. For the rest it is a question of character, consistency and leadership. Good manager, professional players and stability in the board room. The ones that are knee dip in s*** off the field (Pompey) are more likely to go down than the relatively stable clubs. The poor performance on the field and the off the field problems become reinforcing, your team loses confidence, and you slip into a nose dive. The mackems aren't at that point yet, but they could easily arrive there. Just because their players are marginally more talented than those of Hull or Stoke or Wigan is almost irrelevant.
