This is right - we need CBs who can go into the team NOW, and I find it ridiculous that the club have let Lascelles go back to Forest for the season; if he's as good as they think he is, surely he could have done a job here. Let's face it, Colo is going to struggle for pace this year but his experience and reading of the game would have helped Lascelles to settle in and gain experience. Neither Saylor nor Williamson are PL quality so CB is a position that could cost us big time this season. As for Darlow, we don't know yet whether Krul will still be here in Sept..just as people are speculating that we 'could make more signings' there is just as much chance of either Tiote or Krul going out of the door at the last minute so we may have needed Darlow, No, this double signing just smacks to me of Ashley seeing a great chance of making quick money on these guys, especially Lascelles, and the fact that Arsenal wanted to buy him - and pay relatively big money for a youngster - would have had him licking his lips. It actually wouldn't surprise me if Lascelles NEVER played for our first team but was sold on....... Agreed with the second paragraph, but that only counters your first paragraph. Maybe there's another central defender on the way, or maybe Pardew's been told to use MWM :/

Only Keegan's team beat Man Utd 5-0, who at the time were head and shoulders (alongside us) ahead of the league. I'd say that the Man Utd of Robson's era were weaker and we weren't as competitive against them. Good yardstick imo, but that aside, the calibre of player we had in 95/96 were a cut above.

Maybe Brenda will improve the players which will in turn improve Liverpool? As a Newcastle United fan, I can safely say that in the past 8 years I've never seen a player improve significantly since joining our club, ergo it cannot happen anywhere else either.

On the vice-captain subject, Nolan was made club captain only 6 months after joining and whatever you think of him as a player, he got the motley cru playing together and even made Joey Barton look good for 18 months. I think some players just emanate leadership and respect. He was already the captain of Ajax and we really don't have any players in our bargain bin who might succeed Colo.

I think Arsenal will finish above Liverpool, Sanchez is a better signing than Remy. IMO there's a bit more to it than just comparing those 2, I believe Debuchy to be vastly superior to Sagna as an attacking fullback, and if Sanchez can dovetail with Ozil, they can have any old donkey up front and they'd be a team to be reckoned with.

Jonas got first team football 2 years longer than it was worth even having him on the bench. The club have been far too kind to him. Tbf the odd game when he was forced into a central role, he was much less useless. Hasn't been able to beat a man since Keegan left though.
