Don't want to take anything away from their achievement, especially vs Brazil, but I wouldn't call it perfectly balanced. Each player's versatility makes it so, IMO. If anything I would say they're actually quite similar. No outstanding defensive midfielder, an no outstanding playmaker either. I may have misunderstood but I took your point to mean they compliment each other well with their different strengths and weaknesses, which I don't really think is the case.

Too mistake prone to be considered one of the absolute best, on his day he is possibly better than Thiago Silva (who is the only central defender on the shortlist). I see Luiz as a brilliant footballer, but he's way too mental to ever be a top, top defender. I hope for the sake of the national team that he doesn't have one of those days in the World Cup. I do think he plays better for Brazil than Chelsea though, TSilva is such a calming influence. IMO Luiz is a big game player. There's a lot of truth in what you say, I think he might play well against better teams when he knows he can't drop his focus, against worse teams he'll switch off when there's not much happening. Germany mustn't have been good enough for him to not drop his focus. Maybe there wasn't enough happening for him?

Regarding Krul, I think after the secondd half Van Gaal felt we had the upper hand at that point and Huntelaar could be the difference. i don't blame him, seeing as it was like playing with 10 men sometimes with Van Persie.

Pens should have been Robben, Kuyt, Huntelaar, Sneijder and Clasy. I admire Vlaar for having the guts for taking the first after possibly the best defensive display this World Cup tonight, but his team mates really hung him out to dry by sending him out as the first man to take one..

van Gaal did a fantastic job with the team you guys had. Really impressed. Said it from the beginning though, the two best teams played on the same side of the bracket I agree Flip.
