Well I'll have to disagree with you there Coach. I think Smith could do very well in that role - I think he would get as many if not more goals than Diouf (who is not very prolific at all for a front player). That role as the most defensive of the front three in the 433 requires a lot of discipline to keep getting in behind the ball as soon as we lose posession - Smith definitely has the edge over Diouf here as well. Added to that he'd take some responsibility for winning balls in the air (neither Anelka or Diouf do this at Bolton) and he would be in his element I reckon. Long term I'd like to see Milner be first choice, but its good for everyone if Milner doesn't have the preesure of being the only option in that position at such a young age, so we've got Smith as another very strong choice. His versatility definitely made him a more attractive signing, but I don't think he was signed as a utility man - for one thing I don't think he would have agreed to come unless Sam had a role for him, as it seemed he'd had enough of being moved about at Man U. Watch him prosper once he's settled into one position and gets used to it. blueyes.gif

Bear in mind this is a newish role for him and we're only 3 games into the season.

Crouch spoke at Lee Hendrie's leaving dinner a couple of months ago, and said that if he left Liverpool, he'd come back here like a shot. We'd never pony up the kind of cash they want for him, though. Don't they want 20m or something for him? Different regime or not, selling a player for 2m then buying him back a few years later for 10 times as much would be quite something. I reckon £8-10m would be enough. They might be looking for him to partially fund the Baptista deal. :giggle:
