All fair. I don't think Rice and Phillips have any synergy at all which is my main concern. It's been very easy for a lot of our opponents to play round them in spells in games because they're 15-20 yards apart. Being compact will be key against Italy. Force them out wide and let them cross if need be.

Henderson has to start, he's our best passer and balls over the top and in behind will be key for us, even if it pushes them back slightly. Just hope Southgate doesn't fall into the trap of being 'loyal'. He has to manage the game in front of him.

Does seem like we're not allowed to be excited, be giddy about being in a semi final and joke around about winning it. We're all like kids at Christmas having a decent England side. It would be really nice if we put in a convincing performance on Saturday and were a little more positive. I'm not against keeping the 3 at the back tbh, as long as the full backs do genuinely push on and we play a little bit quicker to move Ukraine around. Also the Muller thing, it comes from an individual mistake and not a system fault. It was a big moment but then the Maguire header and Kane's fluff in the first half could have as easily gone in, as could Werner's 1 on 1. Both sides had a bit of luck.

Just think they lacked pace other than Werner, who is also erratic. And nobody to commit players like Sterling did for us pretty well.

Got the job done, it's all you can ask considering we're still developing as a squad and team. It wasn't perfect but I thought considering Germany know that system inside out and we made a pretty big tactical change we did well. Thought Phillips was excellent, my MOTM. Fucking come on.
