  1. I don't think Ashley has had a poxy season, far from it, but I'm surprised he gets all the plaudits when I'd say Luke Young, Martin Laursen and Barry have all been better for us. Ashley is the most exciting player we have, though.

I actually rate Downing, he owned us at our place this season. Young's better, mind.

I agree. Really do rate Downing nowadays.

Quality player, who hardly ever makes the wrong decision with the ball.

  2. Poyet has no experience of managing a club so should be one we avoid to be honest.

    Neither did Zola though.

Apparently Poyet pretty much managed while he was Wises assistant at Leeds with Wise playing more of a senior/DOF role for the most part.

  3. I'm thinking the setup is most ideal for Poyet who they initially wanted.

There is a very experienced group of coaches in place already and it would be a bit messy getting rid of all of them at this point in the season and bringing a whole new group in as most managers would want to do.

Poyet on the other hand would actually benefit from an experienced set of coaches, most of who he will likely know through Dennis anyway.

  4. NUFC face fight to land Didier Deschamps

Sep 9 2008 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

    Didier Deschamps

NEWCASTLE United could face a fight if they turn to legendary French World Cup-winning captain Didier Deschamps.

Spurs’ assistant manager Gus Poyet remains the overwhelming favourite to succeed Kevin Keegan after working as Dennis Wise’s No 2 at Leeds United and Swindon Town.

The Uruguayan is believed to have already held talks in the capital with United’s representatives.

But former Juventus and Monaco boss Deschamps is also on Newcastle’s radar should Poyet – who is reluctant to give up life in the capital – opt out of a switch to Tyneside. Poyet’s superb relationship with United executive director Tony Jimenez may also see the Londoner swing a deal despite Poyet’s reservations about moving north again.

Deschamps fits into the framework of the club’s controversial two-tier management system which resulted in Kevin Keegan quitting the club.

However, Deschamps is an admirer of executive Dennis Wise after developing a strong friendship with the Londoner during his solitary season in England back in 1999/2000 when Chelsea won the FA Cup, beating the Magpies in the semi-final 2-1 at Wembley.

Yet although Deschamps is currently out of work, sources in France claim that he is in line for the national team job with current Les Bleus head coach Raymond Domenech fighting for his job.

A source close to Deschamps told the Chronicle: “It’s no secret that Didier was close to Dennis Wise during his time at Chelsea.

“And he was certainly interested in the job back in January before Keegan came in.

“The problem is that everybody thinks that he will be the next national team manager, very soon.”

Back in January when his agent Jeannot Werth was asked if Deschamps would be interested, he replied: “Yes, why not?”

Deschamps’ managerial CV is quite impressive – as a rookie boss he won the French League Cup with Monaco in 2003 before leading the principality side to the Champions League final in 2004, where they lost 3-0 to Porto.

And in 2007 he resigned as Juve coach after taking the club back to Serie A after the club had been demoted following the infamous match-fixing scandal a year earlier which had resulted in Fabio Capello losing his job.

France – who were dumped out of Euro 2008 in the group stages – were also gunned down by Austria 3-1 over the weekend in their World Cup qualification group.

And failure to beat Serbia on home soil tomorrow night could spell the end for Domenech, with national hero Deschamps one of the favourites to take his place.

French Football Federation president Jean-Pierre Escalettes has also given Domenech the dreaded vote of confidence after the loss in Vienna.

Now Le Graet, the FFF’s vice-president, has again come out in defence of the coach with the pressure growing in France.

He said: “People are coming to see Domenech’s head roll more than to watch a match. That is not right.”

Deschamps was staying under the radar today, with the outcome of France’s clash with Serbia the key to his future.

Meanwhile, the Chronicle revealed in the aftermath of Keegan’s departure that Brazilian legend Zico was interested in taking the post.

And the former Japan and Fenerbahce manager said today: “The Newcastle job is one that I would be very interested in taking. It would be a privilege and an honour.

“I am used to working alongside technical directors so this isn't an issue for me. It's normal for me to work in those conditions.”

United are also keeping a close eye on events at Upton Park with Gianfranco Zola the favourite to take over from Alan Curbishley.

West Ham, though, are still waiting to see if Slaven Bilic will change his stance on the position after Croatia have played England tomorrow night before making a final decision.

Zola would then re-enter the Newcastle equation, although it would the worst kept secret in football that United would be his second choice after setting his heart on the Hammers job.

Another name that can’t be ruled out for St James’s Park is former England boss Terry Venables.

He has an understanding with Wise after managing the former midfielder with England and has told friends not to rule him out of a possible head coach role working under the former Wimbledon and Chelsea star.

    Get it right Dennis  :knuppel2:

Poyet is still smarting from the spurs. Domenech is firmly re-entrenched. Zola has joined West Ham and is doing well. Your pal Deschamps is still available.

    Please don't mess this up.

    :smug:

  5. They have him? Or they are going for him?

Sorry just changed it. Was so shocked I jumped the gun there.

    They're going for him.

I feel sick about it. I think Sven is quality.

They will definitely be moving upwards with him now.

  6.

    On SSN now!

    :dave:

    Okay now I'm really upset.

    Portsmouth after Sven?!

    And we have ...  :kinnear:

    Just so damn wrong.

I mean I  don't despise the  :kinnear: as much as some others, but what the heck?! It just seems so damn wrong that Pompey could get Sven while we have you know ...

  7. I think he will be gone too. I think the contract story was in place for the transfer window and also to stop any speculation of the situation in the papers.

Gus Poyet will be a very big possibility in the summer.

Poyet confirmed he was approached after Keegan left, but he decided agaist it due to the turmoil at the club.

Wise absolutely loves the guy and they have proved to be a very succesful team already.

With things having calmed down so much since Keegan left, and also having had expectactions brought so low with Kinnear, not to mention Poyet is now completely available, with a whole summer to prepare I wouldn't be surprised to see him put in place then.

Nothings calmed down, were merely in limbo about our future. If things had calmed down there wouldnt still be endless discussion on here and with other fans about whats going on at the moment.

    Are you serious?

Have you forgotten what was going on just after Keegan left.

Funnily enough I could have asked the same thing. Its still happening. Nothings changed, were still in limbo without knowing who will be manager, who will be in charge, whether were likely to be sold, whats going to happen. If youre on about protests then fans still arent buying merchandise, renewals of season tickets is looking like going down, the NUSC are planning whatever boycott or march theyre going on,  and I can see more protests, chants and general disgust if Kinnear is with us throughout the summer and next season. Nothing has calmed down, its still a f***ing mess.

The atmosphere is nowhere near as hostile right now and I think a lot more managers would be a lot more comfortable coming in at the start of the summer than they would have been back then. No doubt about it.

    Don't think you'll be consulted.

Didier Deschamps or Dimatteo wouldn't surprise me either.

  11. Alot of what he says makes sense, and i think "fair enough",....... then i remember Joe Kinnear is our manager.

Dennis Wise has been confirmed as the director of football now.

This essentially means that the manager in place will have to be someone he is familiar/comfortable working with.

Hence the approach for Gus Poyet, which he confirmed, after Keegan left the club. Dennis is also very familiar with JK also.

If we bring someone else in this summer let's just hope he has some more impressive pals than JK who would be more willng to come in now things have calmed down at the club.

    Someone like Deschamps for example.

So with your theory we're basically limited to Dennis's Facebook? :(

    What a bloody mess.

    It's a weird one.

Who knows? Dennis does seem to have some impressive contacts in football from his Chelsea days in particular, perhaps there were other promising managers he would have been happy to work with who didn't want to come in due to the uproar at the club at the time. Gianfranco Zola was linked at the time also I remember, but not sure if it was just the papers though. In hindsight that would have been a good move it seems.

Let's hope come the summer if need be we are thinking more along the lines of someone young and with promise e.g. DiMatteo rather than old and crusty like Venables.

  12. Btw if we'd spent £8m on Johnson does that mean there would have been nothing to spend in the summer?

    I wouldn't think so.

I think in the summer we will make every effort to get rid of a good number of players who just aren't worth what they are costing the club, and this will allow for more money to be invested on top of the £8 million currently sitting there.

Many thought that would happen last summer. And this January.

We've given two of them new contracts.

I would imagine both Butt and Shola are seen as squad players who are experienced and familiar with the club and area now, and more than anything are ssen as important dressing room players. I can't imagine they would have been giving substantial contracts and hopefully they will not be seen as key players next season.

Best case scenario I know, but I'm hoping that this is the sort of idea anyway.

  13. Alot of what he says makes sense, and i think "fair enough",....... then i remember Joe Kinnear is our manager.

  14. Very interesting stuff regarding still paying for players who had already joined the club before they arrived. Looks like this has clearly affected our spending on new players, as any budget would still be going towards these players we already "own" but don't really.

Let's hope this new commitment will mean the complete demolition of this abomination of a team barring a few good ones obviously. I think we will only really be able to move on as far as recruiting new players, after a good number of the current lot are off the books.

  15. Arsenal are no better.

At least they've got an excuse- a man sent off and one of their top players got injured early doors.

Spurs are totally clueless despite all that AND having home advantage.

Arsenal are missing so many first team players it is untrue.
