  1. Chelsea sacking holds up Magpies

May 26 2008 by Stuart Rayner, The Journal

THE power vacuum at Chelsea could delay Newcastle United’s attempts to sign winger Shaun Wright-Phillips – but the Magpies are determined to ensure there is no such confusion surrounding Michael Owen’s St James’s Park future.

While Newcastle will be made to wait before they can sign £10m-rated Wright-Phillips they are anxious not to go into the new campaign unsure if it will be Owen’s last on Tyneside.

Kevin Keegan is keen to once more work with Wright-Phillips, the right winger he nurtured at Manchester City. With the England international failing to make the substitutes’ bench for last week’s Champions League final, United might have been able to quickly push through a deal for the 26-year-old – but for the sacking of Avram Grant, announced on Saturday.

Newcastle’s board is in a similar state of transition but the appointment of new chairman Derek Llambias is expected to be rubber-stamped within the next fortnight and Chris Mort’s replacement will be charged with clarifying Owen’s situation as soon as possible.

United’s captain has a year remaining on his present contract and the Magpies are determined not to go into the new campaign with the uncertainty still hanging over them. Llambias will be told to either persuade Owen to sign an extension to his current deal or move him on while the centre-forward still commands a fee, though that could be easier said than done. The Bosman regulations and Owen’s status as one of the world’s best-paid footballers mean his advisers hold the whip hand in any negotiations this summer.

Keegan made Owen his captain after returning to Newcastle in January and has repeatedly stated that his is the signature he most wants this summer. But with owner Mike Ashley eager to reduce the club’s wage bill, there is speculation Owen’s proposed new deal will be on much-reduced terms and, if that is the case, he will only leave on his own terms.

It is hard to imagine Owen signing a new contract that does not meet his expectations this summer and if no Champions League club comes in with an irresistible offer for him, he may prefer to see out his final 12 months before moving as a free agent on a potentially more lucrative contract.

Having had it made clear only last Wednesday that he did not have a long-term future at Stamford Bridge, Wright-Phillips’ Chelsea career is now back in a state of limbo.

Whether the 26-year-old will be part of the Blues’ plans next term will depend on who is making them, but even if Wright-Phillips is set on a move regardless of who succeeds Grant, it is hard to see his current club sanctioning it.

With Blues scouting chief Frank Arnesen still in place there is nothing to stop Chelsea’s transfer business continuing as normal. But, while the Dutchman will be happy to let squad players such as Steve Sidwell go, he might prefer not to have any senior figures move in or out until he can be sure the decisions meet with the approval of the new manager.

Meanwhile, Blackburn Rovers have distanced themselves from reports of a summer bid for Damien Duff. The winger has put his Northumberland house on the market, presumably in preparation for his widely-expected sale. But the club where he began his career have denied any interest in bidding for Duff.

“Damien’s name has never been mentioned by anyone on the coaching staff in terms of being a summer transfer target, and I don’t think Mark (Hughes) sees that position as a priority,” a Blackburn source was quoted as saying at the weekend.

“There are other areas of the team he would prefer to strengthen.”

  2. I think it is quite possible SWP will be coming to Newcastle as it is being reported quite a bit all of a sudden, and I think if anything could tempt him to leave it would be working with Keegan again.

If we do sign him would he work in the formation we were using towards the end of last season? I do recall Chelsea playing him in their three man midfield at times and I think he did alright.

Would he replace Geremi perhaps? SWP certainly has the work rate but we would be lacking some height in there for sure.

  3. It's quite obvious I wandered into a Martins love in and told a few home truths that people didn't want to hear.

If you want a player who costs nothing and would probably be just as effective in that position i'd go for EMO. Spend the £13 million we could potentially recoup on Martins on a decent playmaker to replace Owen (Arshavin, just to keep you Pop Pickers happy) if we're going to continue to play 433.

We'd still have to pay big money for a hell of a striker to play alongside Owen then, because all of the pace and athleticism would be gone from our forward line with Owen replacing Martins there.

    That's bollocks right there.

While Owen isn't as fast as he used to be he's still pacey compared to your average striker. I've nee idea where this myth about him having no pace at all now has come from. Granted, he isn't like s*** off a stick like Martins but pace isn't everything.

So you think the current system would work with Owen and Viduka upfront?

If you honestly think that then you sir are a joker, and you clearly didn't watch any of our games which featured this formation.

If Martins is moved on to be replaced with Owen upfront then Owen's partner would have to be someone athletic and pacy e.g. a Darren Bent.

  5. Just going on what I've been told, a Rangers fan I know got told a few players were leaving Rangers (Boyd was one, McGregor another) More importantly, a Ranger's player told him Cuellar was leaving, he spoke to the players after the cup final on saturday.

    Only just noticed that ...

  6. I'm not sure Anthony Annan is good enough.....He has played well this season, but the Norwegian league is a million miles away from the Premier League. I don't think he's able to cope with the pace in the prem.. He seems like a stupid person as well

Maybe he could have been a squad player for us, but now we have to improve our starting 11 rather than strengthening our squad.

    Please expand on this.

  7. Baggio, please tell us you're on the windup man. You can't be serious with all this s****

I sussed you pages ago tbh.

If I was on the wind up I'd have said so ages ago.

So was none of this sorted out during the meeting in London then? Did they not agree on some sort of happy medium? A few experienced players to keep Keegan happy?

  8. Wow interesting stuff Baggio. I just read an article in tomorrow's Times that appears to back up some of what you are saying regarding our targets. Quite worrying to be honest!

    Newcastle United

Budget About £20 million, and whatever they can generate from sales.

Areas of need Aside from a new contract for Michael Owen, Kevin Keegan wants two or three players who can set the place alight. A left back, a centre half, guile in midfield and possibly another forward. Directors want youngsters with a sell-on value.

Targets They have two lists, remember. On Keegans, experience dominates: the likes of Richard Dunne, John Arne Riise and Peter Crouch. On Dennis Wises: Bafetimbi Gomis, Amara Diané and many others.

Surplus to requirements Stephen Carr, James Troisi and Peter Ramage have already been released. Most supporters would shed few tears if Alan Smith was sold after a miserable debut season. Shola Ameobi will leave, while Caçapa, Charles NZogbia and Gérémi are vulnerable.

I am getting quite concerned to be honest and there might be some truth to what Baggio is saying. Keegan has been going on about prem experience from day one, and the club clearly want to go for talented youngsters.

Looking at some of the names on Keegan's supposed list above is somewhat depressing as it is the same old regurgitated prem players and it does make you want something a bit fresher and more exciting with more potential. Not sure I am happy with Keegans outlook regarding this whole situation.

That's where Baggio is getting his story from man

Only just popped up as it is in tomorrow's paper. Hope your right though HTT as I am well and truly sick of all this shite.

Forget top 6 and all that bollocks. Right now I would settle for harmony at the club and everyone pulling in the same direction and a good positive season with healthy progress.

  9. Oh common, our budget is £20 million but we're willing to bid £18 million for one player.... yet the directors want a list of young players.  It doesn't take much logical thinking to dispel the s*** from the papers people, think a bit more.

For the millionth time the Modric deal was going to be paid as £6.5 million over three years.

It's likely that most of our deals will be done this way from now on.

  11. Marcelino in, King Kev out?

May 25 2008 by Neil Farrington, Sunday Sun

NEWCASTLE are again considering replacing Kevin Keegan with top Spanish coach Marcelino, according to sources in Spain.

Talk of United’s interest in Marcelino began in March but died down amid their late-season mini-revival under Keegan.

However, the Magpies are said to be one of a handful of clubs to have contacted Marcelino’s agents this week following his resignation as Racing Santander coach.

And the Sunday Sun understands that United have been in regular communication with the 42-year-old’s representatives via a member of their new scouting network in Spain.

Marcelino — full name Marcelino Garcia Toral — stunned Spanish football by securing a sixth-place finish for relative minnows Santander in his first season at the club.

But he walked out on Wednesday, insisting Racing do not have the resources to fulfil his managerial ambitions.

He has since confirmed that Valencia and “other teams” have spoken to his agents.

But with Valencia having only just unveiled Unai Emery as their new coach, it seems unlikely Marcelino will start next season there.

And he and Newcastle are directly linked through scout Pablo Longoria.

Having identified several new signings for Marcelino at Racing last summer and during his time at previous club Recreativo de Huelva, the Sunday Sun can reveal that Longoria — thought to be just 21 — is now talent-spotting in Europe on behalf of Newcastle.

And with the two men remaining close, it is little wonder that talk is rife in Spain of a United approach for Marcelino.

Longoria is liaising with Newcastle’s technical co-ordinator Jeff Vetere in scouring Europe for bright young talent.

But the young Spaniard has no professional background in football, with his apparently encyclopaedic knowledge of players across the Continent said to be gained from the Internet.

  12. I'm surprised people are still so unimpressed with martins considering how much improvement he showed under Keegan in the new formation.

Will be very much a case of not knowing what you've got till it's gone I reckon.

  13. Olic Eyes Premier League Switch

Croatia star Ivica Olic’s agent could be tempted by a move to the Premier League this summer - possibly with Newcastle United.

The agent of Hamburg's Croatian international striker Ivica Olic has told setantasports.com that his client has not been approached by Portsmouth - but a  move to Newcastle in the summer has not been ruled out.

Olic will feature for his country at Euro 2008, but after the tournament is over he will focus on his club career. And he will negotiate a move away from Hamburg SV, according to his representative.

The Bundesliga star is regarded as a big talent, and enhanced his reputation during the Euro qualifiers when Croatia beat England home and away.

Portsmouth and Newcastle are both rumoured to have been monitoring Olic, and when asked if he denied having any contact with the two clubs, agent Gordon Stipic told setantasports.com:

“I have not spoken directly with Portsmouth, but Newcastle…

“I definitely think he will be leaving this summer. We will wait for the end of Euro 2008 to take a decision. England is an option for him, obviously.

“We have contacts in England and in Spain as well, but I cannot say much at this stage.”

  14. 1. The Modric situation.

    2. The Euros kicking off very soon.

    3. Uncertainty over our whole new approach to getting players in.

    4. Uncertainty over the boards ambition.

All these things have knickers in major twists and really it's hard to fault that. It's an uncertain time but hopefully we'll come out of it okay.

  15. Maethis making an already potentially irritating situation infinitely more annoying.

Tottenham are ridiculous if they sign this guy because then I honestly don't know what the hell kind of team they are planning on building. If it happens it will be on to the next for us.

Last time I checked Nasri was still available as Arsenal appear to be dilly dallying so we'll just hijack their s*** okay Maethis! So clear off!

apart from press reports which are often wrong or downright lies, what makes you so sure we are after him in the first place ?

Hence the word potentially. Do you need a definition for that?

i read it as potentially signing for spurs. if he did why should we be pissed off if we aren't even sure we were in for him in the first place.

    Well then you misunderstood.

I meant the situation as a whole i.e. if it turns out that we were indeed in for him and Spurs trumped us again a la Modric.

  18. Could this really not have gone in the "Realistic Targets" thread or whatever if you think we should go for him? No need for a new thread when we haven't been linked.

    Pardon my overexcitement.

Can someone merge this or whatever it is the powers that be do?
