My boss is a Brighton fan and said before we signed him that Burn played LB for them on a number oif occassions and did well there.

No real worries for me, and we get Botman starting.

Not just that but he's also played left wing back for them.

Couldn't believe how well he got up and down the pitch in that position at his size. Very underrated athlete for his stature.

Yeah I know he's the German I was refering to but he's 26 and not played anywhere higher than the Belgian league so still think think it's a risk

Ah, I see. They must be pretty confident about it. Maybe he's performed well in pre season training with them.

Surely the best way to keep Wilson fit will be to rotate him and not rely on him for 90 minutes of every game. This lad will get plenty of starts imo, assuming it is us in for him.

This will still happen too, sure. Have an inkling he'll also start with Wilson at times also.

Do find it a bit odd that Brighton are seemingly going into the season with Welbeck, the random German lad and a bunch of youngsters as their strike force

They could be really good if they got a striker who can score consistently

They're going to eventually introduce this guy into the team, and deservedly so after his exploits last season.

£25m + £8.5m add-ons is within our sort of price range, judging by what we were offering for Harrison.

I wonder if this means we either think he can play on the right, or we're getting a RW on loan (Pulisic please...)

We won't be signing this lad to play on the wing. He's Wilsons understudy.

Reckon we are looking at a loan for RW.

Like @STM has said, I thought he'd be Wilson's understudy too, and to some extent he will be in the long run, but I think there's also a chance he also comes in to start.

It won't be on the wing though, as he hasn't ever played in that position, but through the middle as the most advanced attacking midfielder in our midfield three. He often played as a second striker/attacking midfielder playing with Nunez, and looking at his match records from his time in the youth team he has also played in a midfield three. I think it's also the same kind of role we would have given to Maddison had we managed to sign him.

Our resident Benfica man @Bruno also said the following about him ...

    Quote

Gonçalo is our main striker. Last year he played as an offensive mid/third midfielder and Darwin was our main attacking threat. After Darwin's departure Gonçalo finally started playing as a striker (his best role).

He started this season very well and fits Roger Schmidt's system (an high pressing 4-2-3-1). He is a  hard worker and good finisher. Has the potential to be the striker of our NT in the near future.

We have some other decent strikers so Benfica may be willing to sell. I would not. I believe price would be around 40M€+.

Be interesting to see if he's used in the first team with Wilson if it is Newcastle that has indeed bid for him.

If it was an option, who would people take from Chelsea on loan from the obvious candidates?

If it was just one choice it would have to be Pulisic. His potential contributions playing every week on that right side man ... think it would be incredible.

I do like CHO and Gallagher a lot too, but it would have to be Pulisic first choice.

Yes exactly - so we are not looking for a Dan Burn short-term type.

Again, the hesitation around the Targett transfer is proof. If Targett was 29, I don't think we sign him or at least we take longer to do it. And MT is better than we initially thought he was (fans and mgmt imo).

    OUTFIELD - READ.

30 as a GK is the equivalent of mid / late 20's for an outfield player. That's why we gave Pope a 4-year deal and CW/DB 2.5 year deals. The club expect Pope to be here in 3.5 years, they don't for the other 2. They are not the same type of transfer strategically. Pope was bought with the intention of being here post-midtable transition, the other 2 aint.

    This guy man

At this point I genuinely don't even understand what point you're trying to make anymore as it's all so muddled up now.

    Hope you enjoy the season.

This summer we've not been seriously linked with any outfield player over 25 for a reason.

Yes, because they are specifically looking for younger players to grow with the club as they have said countless times.

Not every older player is automatically 'poor resale value', because not every signing that is made, is made with the view to eventually selling on for profit. The key is not spending a significant outlay on such older players, which we didn't do.

I remember you mentioning Blas as a possible target for us, I read the other day he’s on the verge of signing for Lille ?

Yeah, I saw that report too. Looks like he might be joining them.

There was a lot of talk in December and January that we were looking at Blas, but doesn't seem we followed it up this summer.

    There is.. Watford vs Burnley

Nantes vs Lille on BT Sport should be tasty too.

I'll be scouting Jonathan David, Ludovic Blas, and Moses Simon for Eddie Howe, as well as supporting Paulo Fonseca.

£50m on central defenders and only 1 is likely to start isn't great from FFP perspective though. 1 of them having low resale value and not having European level ability isn't great for FFP either.

Resale value does not apply to a £13 million signing that signed at 29 years old on a two and a half year deal. This is not a significant outlay for such a player, especially one who is a high level backup that can cover more than one position. It's a good value signing.

Had we spent £30 million on him and handed him a 5 year contract then it would be considered a significant outlay for a player that isn't going to be a first team player going forward, and who would be difficult to shift long after he is deemed useful to the team. You're over thinking resale value. It's not as black and white as you're making it out to be.

Dan Burn is ultimately going to transition to being a backup for Botman going forward. He is absolutely European level ability as a back up central defender. He's better than backups sitting on Tottenham, Arsenal, Man Utd and West Ham benches right now, and they're all in Europe this season.

It's some weird form of virtual signalling. What they do is predict an impending doom or worst case scenario, so that they can come back and say "I told you so", if it happens. They rarely celebrate any sort of success, in fact, when there is success they say things like "it will be harder next year".

It's this false idea that the most negative person in a room is the "realist" or just "calling a spade a spade", trying to play the role of the cautious wise owl.

In reality they just get a real kick from pissing on peoples chips or casting a shadow over people's positivity.

This is football, half the fucking league is fantasising on when it might be "their turn". For once it might actually be ours, so for once can we assume the club is doing the right thing and that the future is bright instead of pouring cold water over peoples hopes and dreams. [emoji38]

I don't care if the pessimism turns out to be true. Just let me bathe in this fantasy of lies just a wee while longer because it feels so glorious.

I can't understand how some folks can't just enjoy the moment and the journey to becoming a fully viable club again. Instead they've found something new to worry about already i.e. not getting top 6 quickly enough and upsetting Bruno! My God guys ... chill out

Regarding the transfers, I would even understand it a tiny bit if the window had closed, but it hasn't and the manager and everyone at the club has said we're still trying to do business. But no, it wasn't all done before pre season, like everyone else in football has clearly managed, and so we're just winging it and don't know who to target or how much to pay ... and on and on and on.

The Longer that time goes on and nothing concrete materialises the more im convinced we are done for business. This will make it a very very underwelming transfer window as i fear we wont have made any ground on the teams we are aiming to catch and we until we take that step we will stagnate as a mid table team

We may have to just be prepared to have a few years in transition until decent sponsorship and commercial revenue rolls in. My fear is if that is the case then the likes of Bruno will not be our player for long if we cant provide him the platform he deserves to play on

You guys that are always convinced of the worst and fearful of everything going wrong always sound so similar. It's like the same person is writing all these posts. It's so eerie.

We're done for business. We 'll be a midtable team. We're going to lose Bruno. Crikey!
