While I agree their midfield is a part of the problem imho the main problem is the centre of defence and more specifically Jamie Carragher. He's beyond past it but its not like the rest of their cbs are much better, Coates is an unknown quantity still adapting, Skrtel is overrated and Agger is always getting injured. Instead of going off and spending 20m on Henderson they should have spent some of that on a proven cb To add to their defence, they've got problems upfront. There's such a heavy reliance on Suarez to score and Carroll doesn't look suited to their play. Kuyt can't really cut it either.

Played better than QPR in terms of getting to the byline, but his crossing was poor. Think he attempted 5 and neither got past the first man.

A central midfield of Petrov and Fabian Delph was asking for trouble. Too lightweight - they need to be packing the midfield and play Bent by himself up front. Tiote saw more of the ball than Petrov and Delph put together.

Would that really get on your nerves though? Karl Henry's just looking for an excuse to kick Barton. Was quite interesting at the end of the match, they were hugging each other and then something was said and Barton had to be held back.

Has he played in any reserve matches? I thought it would have been better to have a couple under his belt before giving him a run out in the first team proper, after such a lengthy time out?

After his comments from Monday night, I'd be surprised if we didn't have 5 in midfield. It'd be nice if we tried to play a bit of football, instead of hoofing the ball up in the hope our strikers can hold the ball up.

I think the problem was in midfield rather than on the left. Even if we played Santon, he would still be forced to defend 1 on 1 against SWP which was probably too much for him to handle. So if you say why don't he change the tactics at HT to nullify SWP's threat, then my response was that should he drop Tiote? Sorry, my post wasn't that clear. The midfield was the problem. As identified by many others, Tiote and Cabaye were getting overran by QPR's 3 (4 sometimes as Tarrabt floated across the pitch). He should have done the same against Arsenal - take off the least influential striker (Shola) and bring in another midfielder. Raylor was another issue. He's a poor defender with poor positional sense. I haven't seen enough of Santon, but I would have thought he'd be more comfortable playing against SWP than Raylor was.

Pardew changed formation at half time against Arsenal (Ba off, Obertan on), so I have no idea why he didn't bother changing it at HT last night. Raylor was getting shafted by SWP in the first half, I honestly thought he would have brought Santon on. At least he could see Shola was shit and brought him off early in the second half.
