I think the most likely situation is that Enrique's career here is just drawing to a natural close. He is coming to the end of his contract at a time when he's simultaneously getting too good for us and reaching an age when he's starting to think about regular international and European football. Still constantly amazed at the lack of communication inside football clubs like.

Obviously I don't know the truth, but it just seems far-fetched that this level of spin is going on. Maybe I'm naive. Thing is, all it would take is Enrique to say he wants to sign or even he wants to talk, and everyone would take his side anyway.

Do you really believe the club operate this level of PR control? Can't see it myself, and I can't see journalists buying into it when Enrique or his representatives could easily refute it.

I've never seen Forster play, but would it really be so weird to pick Forster? He's just completed a whole season of first team football for a top team (admittedly in Scotland).

I don't disagree, I just think expecting a "20 goal guarantee" is too much. Carroll's half-season might turn out to be how he always performs, or he might have had a freakishly good time, we'll see.

That basically doesn't exist in the Premier League though, certainly not for mid table clubs. And Carroll certainly wasn't it.

Well the reason was to improve the general financial health of the club, and because we were being offered silly money. The upshot is that we should be able to spend more than we would have otherwise.

I don't think we sold Carroll to improve the squad. We sold Carroll because the deal was too good to turn down - deciding what to do with the money is separate.

I'm pretty happy with those signings you list - if they're cheap then all the better. Would like a top-draw striker but they're hard to find and even harder to persuade to come to a mid table club. We might also end up buying Zog for a decent fee and a replacement for Enrique.

Honestly can't see any reason why he would go to Everton or Villa ahead of Newcastle. Neither are teams on the up or with the French influence and attachment he already has for us. Not saying we will get him, and you have a point about Liverpool and Spurs (if they're even interested) but otherwise I think we've got a decent shout.

I know I'm biased, but I think he would choose us over all those clubs except maybe Liverpool.
