It would be great if he came but realistically we need to sign players that will get us into europe then we can start fishing for so called wonder kids. Veloso would have been around when we played sporting in the UEFA cup (albeit as a bairn), he will know of us, we also played them in a friendly. However, i agree with the sentiment that we need to get to europe then pick up these players. BTW, noone on this earth could convince me that we are not a bigger draw than Villa, Pompey, Blackburn, Man City and Everton. Spurs i can understand because of the london factor but not the others, that alone puts in with a good shout for these players. Agreed, I'm not saying we shouldn't go for these players, we should, we just need to have plenty of back up plans if it doesn't work.

Definately. Even if this hadn't happened we still needed one anyway as Smith is not a target man or forward he's a holding midfielder who can't play in midfield so just breaks up our own play in the final 3rd. Edit: My point about smith was on the basis Viduka won't play 20 games in a good year.

People are making alot out of these comments. In my opinion he said what he thinks to a)Try to lower the expectations of the fans b)We don't have 150M to spend to break into the top 4 if you want an instant fix. c)His contracts for 3 years. It will take at least that to be in any sort of poistion to do so unless one of the top 4 has some kind of crisis. But on similar note from what I've seen and heard it could be Arsenal if they lose Fabregas and Hleb there will be a procession of outgoings.

I honestly think some people overhype how big a name Juande Ramos is.. As for London, well we can offer more money so we each have an advantage there. If we do that then we're looking at mediocre players and that won't help us at all. Take Tottenham on. If we don't bother to compete then we'll always be losers. Not really. Gattuso is good enough for us but I doub't he'd come. He said he wants to end his career in Glasgow. Shorey if Reading go down -5m (If not Seb Larsson does a decent job a LB as well as RB and Midfield. Could be useful to have in the squad as a backup for Enrique and Beye.) -2-3M Spend the rest on 2 Midfielders and Striker possibly Crouch, Bullard and Somone like Appiah. I have had an idea for a while to try and make it a bit more competitive. They should cap the number of transfers a side is allowed to make per season dependant on position. Teams who lose players because of a bosman will also be allowed 1 additional player per player released. For example Man U win the league. They are allowed 1 or 2 transfers excluding bosmans. Bolton finish say 16th. They are allowed 8 transfers excluding bosmans. Promoted teams allowed any number of signings. Along the lines the NFL draft i.e. handicap the succesful teams.
