Pre-Season 2018/19: Newcastle United 0 - 1 FC Augsburg (FT)

Enjoyed this much more when the shortened version did the rounds during the group stages of the WC It's still great, one of my favourite skits. -
If it did, it only ruined the final for you due to your pre-existing ideas about the concept of VAR - as it did nothing bad tonight. The first goal was from a free kick awarded from a clear dive. It's not in VAR's remit currently but it seems so wrong, considering we all (including VAR refs) saw it on replays within 5 seconds It's tough cause if VAR call that, they're basically becoming the ref and will have to call out all dives or wrong free kick decisions. A goal came directly from it though, so it'd be good if something could be done about that type of situation in future. Fuck knas what, like edit: maybe they could be given power to inform the ref of any clear dive (if he wrongly gave a free kick).. anywhere on the pitch As much as I love VAR, I guess I'm kinda against that, as it would basically prevent any free-kicks from being taken quickly.

Watched the replay from a few different angles and now think it’s more a pen than not a pen. Hand moves quickly in front of the ball. Can see why the ref gave it.

Disagree. Doooooonooooovaaaaaaaaaaaaan -
Dunno like. Everytime I saw Modric play, he made the right decision, no one could get the ball off him, and he just looked so elegant out there. You thought he'd be dispossed and he'd just switch the ball out to someone who'd have grass to run on to. Does that make him the best player though? Don't believe it does tbh. Personally Pogba and Mbappe were more consistent, had more impactful moments and overall were better. Like I said I have no issue with it, not like they gave it to a no talent bum it just seems very political to me. For me Kante was more influential to France's success than Pogba. Mbappe had moments of greatness, not at all consistent enough for that award IMO. Modric was consistent throughout, even if not consistent at the level he potentially could be consistent at.

Yeah, I dislike Modric (seems I dislike every footballer ) but he was easily Croatia's best player this WC, and nothing wrong with giving him the best player award even if I feel others perhaps were more deserving.

It was horrible due to the vuvuzelas, but I enjoyed certain matches more in '10 than '14 where the 7-1 is basically the only thing I remember - and it's only four years ago, hence why I put that last. They were both horrible though. -
your arm isnt a goal scoring part of the body Your shoulder is. which was in front of the foot Nah, that angle's in no way conclusive. As I said, if VAR reviewed it then fair enough. They review everything in real time. With both angles it's pretty clear he's onside like So then why are the commentators notified when an incident is under review? Neither angle is side on, so I couldn't make a decision on either. IIRC it's when VAR has told the on-field ref they should review something in greater detail and the ref has told them to do it. If the ref tells VAR to fuck off, the commentators hears nothing.

Of the ones I've seen (that I remember, I know I watched '94 as well but I was a wee baby). '98 '18 '02 '06 '10 '14 -
They reffed the WC final, so yes, they should. Prior to this match they were the best refs at the WC.

Goal: Ronaldo vs Spain free kick. Match: Belgium 3-2 Japan. Player: Kante was probably the player that contributed the most to his team playing well. Ochoa for Mwxico is a good runner up. Moment: Mexican fans throwing random Koreans into the air.
-
Yes! It's mental that they haven't yet. It’s so frustrating. There’s only like 50-60 minutes of actual play per match, yet maximum 7-8 mins of added time. I hate it.
-
I wish the next rule introduction is stopping the clock when there’s stop in play.
-
Hardly conclusive and clearly worthy of review. Main point being Pogba was quite obviously interfering with play. By being on the field, yes. He’s only involved in the goalscoring event after the ball has left Mandzukic’s head. Mandzukic challenges for the ball ahead of Pogba and because of the other French player close to him, Pogba is behind him and moves into his back after the ball is hit by Mandzukic.
-
Disagree, obviously. And it pains me to do so ‘cause I dislike Pogba.
-
Ref fucked up. VAR doesn’t make decisions. Pogba was offside for the first goal and the VAR people didn't even tell the ref to look at it It was an own goal, there was no offside to look at. Pogba is interfering with play he should have been given offside, or at least VAR should have looked at it No. Except, yes. Pogba's clearly interfering. Not involved with Mandzukic. Apart from jumping with him and leaning into his back: That happens after Mandzukic has hit the ball. Watching the replay, then yes, after the fact he’s «involved». It’s after Mandzukic has done the deed, however.

Half of me want Croatia to win because they’re undersogs, but the other half of me want to see the whinging Croatian fucks cry themselves to death.

No issue with the call myself. Seen those both given and not given, all up to the individual refs opinion on the matter tbh. Not really how it should be, especially with VAR now introduced, is it? A penalty is such a hard punishment in a game of football; a referee should be damn sure before giving it. They way he came back for another look suggests he was anything but. I’d argue nobody outside of a few Frenchies would have given FIFA or the ref any grief if he said ball to hand. Now though... A world cup win forever tainted. If he gave the pen without consulting VAR it’d still be a weak pen. VAR has nothing to do with this, all ref. If anything, VAR should have made the ref not give it as it was fairly weak.

Hasn’t it already been used for a year in Germany and Italy? I'm ludicrously out of touch with football, so it could well have been, aye. Did a quick google, the Australian league, Bundesliga and Serie A have used it for a season already. MLS to begin next year, La Liga as well.
