  1. It's brilliant how much Match of the Day affects people.

I don't understand what you're getting at Dave - are you saying you get a better opinion of Milner if you only watch the highlights?

Most non-NUFC fans I know only watch Newcastle week in week out on Match of The Day and many of them see him as one of the most promising wingers in the country, which personally I don't think he is.

  2. 60k a week for Dunne, piss off.

I'd rather pay 60k to Dunne than most of the 60k/week earners we've had in recent years Smith, Viduka, Barton, Dyer, Parker, Duff,Emre etc.

Viduka is vital to the way the team operates and you know it!

Viduka is on £80,000 a week ... according to the Telegraph.

  3. Cuellar was voted SPL player of the year if I recall correctly, although he did only cost around £2.5 million. If we were to come in with a bid of say £3 million and Smith I could see a deal taking place.

Of course, Smith's wages would be quite a considerable issue. If Smith was willing to accept he has no future here would he accept £40,000 a week for example?

  4. It would be interesting to know what he really said. I can't see a member of the Chelsea ground staff targeting Evra for being an ''immigrant''. Although, I would not rule out out a racist remark targeted at Evra based on his skin colour.

  5. Sven to Valencia. City are f***** next season. I really can't see the getting a manager of Sven's quality after what is presumably about to happen to him.

Money talks. I'm pretty sure Thaksin will find someone of comparable quality, actually.

What if they realise their position could be under threat after a top 10 finish in their first season?

  6. I can't see Smith going anywhere.

He'll be used in the Carling Cup, against much lesser teams in the FA Cup and I can honestly see him turning into a Carr/Babayaro type player who will probably either rot away in the reserves or be sent out on loan until his contract expires simply due to his wages and Keegan seeing him for what he is.

  7. I was expecting Upton Park to be in quite a rough, built-up, intimidating area but with all the cafes, souvenir stalls and those castles on the front, it was more like a day at the zoo.

It must have changed since I last went down, walking from the tube to the ground was a bit dodgy.

Don't get me wrong, it's a shithole, I think the meaningless game and the lush day made it a bit better, we were a bit worried about wearing our colours (did it anyway) but we went in the first pub off the tube and apart from 30 seconds where it suddenly looked like it was going to kick off outside for some reason, we mingled with the West Ham fans and it was fine.

Was a nice day like, I had no problems whatsoever.

  8. if his daughter lives in London there really isn't that much difference between him living here and living in Barca, still a fairly short plane journey

he's still a great players but he's been past his best for nearly two years. Who would he replace Viduka? hardly. Martins? I'd personally be devestated if we sold Martins in the summer, he's less than two seasons away from being a truly world class young (ish) striker

that said, i'd still like him here, Martins at 23 isn't that different from Henry at 23 in fairness. Not that i can see Henry coming here like

Hopefully Viduka and his £80,000 a week would be shown the door.

  9. f****** hell, last time i looked on this thread there was about 12 pages  :undecided:

Saying as there is so many pages, can someone tell me what the latest is on him ?

Seems to be something if theres 30 pages

    Page 29.

Newcastle have fired the first shot in the battle to land Croatia star Luka Modric after he visited the club's training ground.

It is understood the 22-year-old midfielder, accompanied by Dinamo Zagreb vice-chairman Zdravko Mamic, was on Tyneside on Tuesday to discuss a prospective move to St James' Park.

Modric visited the club's Darsley Park training headquarters after holding talks with executive director (football) Dennis Wise and vice-president (player recruitment) Tony Jimenez at the stadium.

Reports from Croatia have suggested the left-sided player is on the verge of completing a £20million move to Newcastle, although Dinamo value him at some £5million in excess of that.

Either fee would smash the club record £17million they paid for England striker Michael Owen almost three years ago, and it remains to be seen to what extent owner Mike Ashley is prepared to fund manager Kevin Keegan's rebuilding programme.

The club's negotiators would hope for some movement on the asking price, although the player's wage demands too are likely to be significant.

  11. They have the big, strong centre-backs that are essential to any Allardyce side in Luisao and Leo. Two full-backs who spend most of the time going forward. Petit, the defensive midfielder would find himself a regular under Allardyce as would Rui Costa for novelty value. Then there is Freddy Adu who would probably rot away under along with their other promising creative player Di Maria. Allardyce could have two target men in Oscar Cardozo and Makuluka as well as the overrated and long gone Nuno Gomes.

It's almost like it's meant to happen.

Class name! We should sign him so I can have it on the back of my shirt!

He's a canny player. It's a shame the best years of his career have been spent on loan. He or Cardozo would be the sort of player who could play in Viduka's role.

  12. I have no interest in making yet another case for Titus Bramble but to include him in the worst team of the season when we ourselves have played s**** like Taylor and Rozenhal is mental

Taylor has certainly made more mistakes this season than Bramble but of course 'he's a promising lad who's still learning'. When Titus was 22 he was being grilled left, right and centre

titus is in their cos of his shockers against everton (pass back) and man city (misses the ball). OK

Bramble has had an outstanding season by his standards.

  13. Bramble has been quite good for Wigan, other than a couple of mishaps. Certainly no worse than Rozehnal and Cacapa.

Agreed. In fact, it's quite sad to put Bramble in the worst team of the season. Almost sour grapes.

  14. The Telegraph today:

Newcastle on verge of signing Luka Modric

    By Rob Stewart

    Last Updated: 1:42am BST 24/04/2008

Newcastle are close to buying highly-rated Croatia midfielder Luka Modric in a £12 million deal with Dinamo Zagreb.

Dinamo vice-president Zdravko Mamic met Newcastle representatives at the city's Malmaison hotel this week for talks over the playmaker who will be a key member of Slaven Bilic's Croatia side at Euro 2008.

It is understood the deal has been spearheaded by Newcastle's director of football, Dennis Wise, and should Modric, 22, sign it would represent a significant coup as he has attracted the attention of Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal.

Mamic, who oversaw Eduardo da Silva's move to Arsenal, has informally confirmed that Modric is near to finalising a move to Newcastle, where manager Kevin Keegan is short of midfield creativity.

There were suggestions last night that Modric was already celebrating a money-spinning move, although it is doubtful that he would earn the £80,000 a week being paid to Dinamo old boy Mark Viduka.

Modric had also been linked with Barcelona, but his compatriot, Portsmouth's Niko Kranjcar, recommended that he move to the Premier League.

Modric underlined his potential during the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign and was instrumental in the 3-2 defeat of England at Wembley in November that alerted clubs across Europe to his talent. Modric's arrival would hasten the departure of Turkey international Emre, but England Under-21 captain Steven Taylor is to be offered a new deal.

"Taylor is a young and promising defender," Newcastle chairman Chris Mort said. "We would like him to stay at Newcastle long term. We will sit down with Steven and his father, and hopefully work something out."

    Luka Modric factfile

Born: Zadar, Yugoslavia on Sept 9, 1985

    Club: Dinamo Zagreb

    Position: Left midfield

Claim to fame: Played in the Croatia team who won 3-2 at Wembley to end Steve McClaren's reign as England coach

Linked with: Newcastle, Tottenham, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Barcelona …

  15. I'm sure there are some other Croatian players worth a punt. Any shouts?

Srna the RB, altho RB isn't a priority, and the lad who scored the third past England who's name escapes me (Petric?) are both decent.

Aye, Petric. He was linked to Chelsea a few months back.
