I don't think he should have been captain either, but it can't be that bad a decision considering we were still promoted and champions with games to spare.
The fact that Hughton didn't drop him could be construed as him "backing Carroll".
However, as Taylor was injured in the first place, it's hard to say whether he would or wouldn't have backed Taylor by keeping him in the team or not.
