  1. And with the World Championship of Ice Hockey under way it means that I'll have to watch the game at home

That's one of the bad things about living in Sweden, especially in a town like this where ice hockey is the King of sports. At least I'll be able to grab me a six-pack of Brown Ale on my way home from work.

and then nip out for more at half time ?

Nah man, you can't buy alcohol after 7 pm (6 in most places even) in Sweden unless you're at a bar.

    :kasper:

    tis true in norway too

  2. NEWCASTLE United Reserves continue their defence of the Northumberland Senior Cup on Tuesday night with Newcastle Benfield making the short trip to Whitley Park (kick-off 7pm).

The Geordies have cruised to the last four of the competition and disposed of Team Northumbria in emphatic fashion in the last round with a resounding 5-0 success.

On target that night was impressive Slovenian youngster Haris Vuckic and he is again set to figure in the squad which faces the Northern League side.

    Coach Richard Money will choose from the following squad;

Fraser Forster, Max Johnson, Sammy Adjei, Ryan Donaldson, Mark Doninger, Shane Ferguson, Matthew Grieve, Jonny Godsmark, Brad Inman, Darren Lough, Callum Morris, Wesley Ngo Baheng, Nile Ranger, James Tavernier, James Taylor, Frank Wiafe Danquah, Haris Vuckic

No Aaron Spear anywhere in sight?

  3. I would pinpoint Partizan as well. I also think Bobby started to lose the plot a bit during that season. Selling Solano was a massive mistake, and although we finished as high as 5th, in that season it was a low points total for that position. Liverpool were poor that season also and it seemed like we were both creeping over the line.

I actually thought Bobby should have been moved upstairs at that point, around the same time Liverpool got rid of Houllier and appointed Benitez. We were still an attractive club for any manager at that time. Im sure Bobby would have moved upstairs and helped to find a successer and we would have had time to appoint someone good as we wouldn't have been short on applicants. The people in charge of Liverpool at the time however were more ambitious and clever that Shepherd. At that point, there was no reason to suggest that Liverpool would go on and become any better than us. We were about on par at the time. They made a good decision, and we didn't make one.

When we eventually did sack Bobby in a disgraceful fashion it was terrible timing. We looked a joke because of it. The dressing room wasn't what it was, and Shepherd decided to bring in Souness, seemly for the sole reason of sorting out the dressing room. The only factor Shepherd could have taken into account looking at it.

Whats sad is that since then there have been so many tipping moments where we could have gone either way. We could have corrected our mistakes and made the right decision to move forward so many times, but through Shepherd and now Ashley we continue to make bad decision after bad decision and we are where we are now. Every single managerial appointment since Robson has been a bad one. When weve had cash to spend, weve given it to the wrong person. I seriously believe if we had tossed a coin every time an important decision had to be made, we would be in a better position now than we are as a club.

    brilliant

  4.

Clearly an impact substitution. No doubt in my mind. Jonas was warming up all game long before coming on. Smith was the other impact sub we had ready in case we took the lead and brought him on to protect it.

After singing his praises, and going on about needing to feed Owen with a steady supply of chances, surely Shearer meant to throw Jonas on when he did, and when some Stoke players were already on yellows/tiring etc..

  5. I think he has come across really well so far.  Dignified and confident and a joke here or there.  Perfect as a figurehead for the club - time will tell on the football side.  A real contrast to Kinnear.  No doubt the latter would have been up for another disciplinary charge over last Saturday's non-goal.

The most prevalent aspect of management that Shearer has exhibited so far I would say is his incredible focus on the job at hand. His interviews and PC's have been flawless. He has projected that air of relaxed yet focused confidence, and having a manager like that will give the players and fans a mountain of support. It must be really difficult to keep that wry smile on his face, and speak with such an assured/assuring tone at all times.

It's such a sensitive time for the players and fans alike, and Shearer recognizes that one slip of the tongue could put a monkey-wrench in all immediate plans to stay up.

  6. Numbers in from Manc U

Manchester United have posted the most spectacular profits for any British football club – while at the same time being part of its biggest debt.

Accounts to June 2008 reveal that annual turnover at the club has risen an incredible 22 per cent to £256.2m, underpinning a 7.5 per cent increase in profits to £80.4m. However, Red Football – the umbrella for United and its various offshoots – confirmed a loss of £44.8m, taking their overall debt to £649.4m.

Critics are bound to pounce on the figure as evidence of an unsustainable financial structure, questioning how it is possible for the Glazer family to make a profit if their losses are so high in a season as successful as the last one. Yet Manchester United's owners have never given any impression of being too concerned about the debt mountain itself, the payments for which were restructured two years ago and currently take £45.5m annually out of United's profits.

Instead they prefer to maintain a drive for profits at a club whose overall value is estimated at over £1bn. Whether, in the current financial climate, they can continue to squeeze even more from the United brand is open to doubt.

oh god to see it go tits for them; i'd LOVE it   bluelaugh.gif

Rather it happened to Liverpool myself tbh. True Man Utd fans are sound, and I tend to discount and ignore the glory hunter element of their support. However, the Liverpool fans I know (true and glory hunting) are masters of cuntery, wummery, and sour bindippery. s***-spinning c*** buckets. The lot of them.

  7. Sadly I can see it being:

    -------------------------------Harper---------------------------------

    Beye--------------Taylor-------------Coloccini-----------Bassong

    Taylor----------------Butt--------------Nolan----------------Jonas

    ---------------------Martins-------------Owen----------------------

    James Taylor?

    Phil "the power" Taylor

    Liz Taylor?

Maybe we can get her on the pitch to proposition one or two of the Stoke lads  :crazy2:

  8. It sounds daft, but Adidas have just went massively down in the cool stakes by doing Boros kit. Its not like they've hit the heights in the league or in fandom to warrant Adidas going for it either.

Agreed. Boro are probably the most insipid and lifeless football club in Europe after Monaco. Pure unadulterated dross.

  9. Gerrard for me.  Messi hasn't done it week in week out in the hardest league in the world, whilst Gerrard has done so consistently.

If messi was over here he would be ducking tackles and diving like Robinho and C Ronaldo.  Lets not forget that La Liga is very open style football, where players are not really put under pressure until in the danger area.  In the EPL Messi would soon get fed up of being dumped on his backside as soon as he got the ball.

I see what you're saying, but Messi's not much of a fanny He has a pretty low center of gravity and is harder to knock off the ball than you think.

  10. I just want to say, for no real reason, that as a player, I f***ing love Michael Essien. Born to play football.

True that. If Ferguson had bagged him when he left Lyon, they would have won the title since then in consecutive years. Can't believe he keeps getting overlooked as a top player. Maybe it's his late run of injuries.
