Mike Ashley is to blame for Newcastle's problems, says Freddy Shepherd

Freddy Shepherd, the former Newcastle United chairman, says Mike Ashley is to blame for the club's plight.

Shepherd was ousted by Ashley after he launched a £134 million takeover two years ago, and he has insisted that the Sports Direct founder will have no one but himself to blame if Newcastle are relegated on Sunday.

Newcastle need to avoid defeat at Aston Villa on Sunday to have any chance of climbing out of the relegation zone.

Nolan up for the fight Shepherd, who said the club were a "shambles" before Alan Shearer took over as interim manager, told Telegraph Sport: "If I was running the club they wouldn't be in this position. Lots of people can buy football clubs but not many can run them. I think he [Ashley] is a great businessman but as far as running a football club is concerned there is a lot left to be desired.

"The Halls and the Shepherds took the club from the foot of the old second division and built the third-largest stadium in the country, as well as developing a fantastic academy and training ground. All the tools are there and they have been misused. They have been cutting corners."

Ashley has always insisted he averted financial disaster at Newcastle, but Shepherd claimed he could not be held responsible for the current problems.

"They tend to blame everyone but themselves. They have to look at themselves and say what have we done wrong here and not start blaming other people. Just be a man stand up and say, 'I've got it wrong. How can we put it right?' "

Last weekend Shepherd was reportedly in talks with American and Middle East businessmen over a Newcastle takeover and he knows he could regain control at a knock-down price should the club be relegated.

"Relegation would be an absolute disaster in terms of corporate [income] and the crowd," Shepherd said. "It took us 12 to 15 years to get it to where it was with a big ground, a great academy and a good set of players when we left, and all of a sudden there's a disaster and there's one thing in life that's true and that's that you can't make a profit out of disaster.

"It would be sickening if we went down. People draw parallels with Leeds but I don't think they're valid parallels. Leeds gambled on being in the Champions League but that's something we never did.

"It will be like climbing a mountain to get back to where we were. If you look at Charlton and Southampton it won't be easy to get out of it. That's when you need experience to get back up there, not people who have never been in a football club in their life before.

"I don't know what's in Mike Ashley's mind in terms of whether or not he will keep it or sell it. He's done the next best thing by taking it off the market but everyone knows it's still on the market.

"They might say it's not for sale but everyone says that when they want to sell something. What will happen when someone comes knocking at their door? I am sure that if he was made the right offer I am sure he would sell. He has had it up for sale once, why not put it up for sale twice."

  2. I think its more the fact that these guys defended every single decision Ashley and co made so fiercely, always stating its for the best that 'this happens' or 'that happens' blah blah they would never admit to a bad decision.

This thread has probably came about now as maybe some forum members just want to see if they have given up hope for him.  Admit his tenure so far has been a disaster.  It would almost be a good thing imo if they did, we would have a 'united' forum for a change even if came about for all the wrong reasons.

Well if we're going to be pedantic here, I will strongly disagree. The names that NE5 mentions did not defend Ashley as much as they indicted Shepherd for his mistakes. As far as I know macbeth was "chief culprit" in providing the club accounts that showed the shambles that Shepherd left us with. Of course that did not go down too well with NE5, and he's gone and lumped the lot of them in one basket, completely oblivious to the same old downright embarrassing posts he himself has showered us with at times.

  3.

I think you might have got a bit confused here, nicko.

Indeed. Anyway my point was a serious one.

What you guys don't seem to realise is that most others don't share your perception of your club. 'Best fans in the world'? purlease. Although I accept that the boos at the final whistle on Saturday were probably for Webb, I can honestly say that I've never heard any fans boo their own manager/players as often as you lot. You seem to think you have a right to success and the pressure you apply with your unrealistic demands for it are in part responsible for your current troubles.

Fifth place two seasons running wasn't good enough for you. No, and Bobby Robson (also a Fulham legend and very deeply respected in these parts) was shown the door. That your club could treat a gentleman like him so dismissively speaks volumes. And what chance did you give Big Sam? My God, he didn't stand a chance with you lot and your ridiculously inflated expectations. Again, speaks volumes.

You seem to think that you can draw up a wishlist of managers and players and that those on it would jump at the chance of joining NUFC. Delusional.

Roy Hodgson is far too intelligent to submit himself to your ridiculous infantile demands. You seem to be the only ones who don't see that. Best fans in the world? That's hilarious. You have made your club unmanagable and, so it seems, unsellable.

  4. Look,we've taken enough s**** since 2005,lets all piss from the same pot, which the vast majority of us do,btw, and support the team.We all know Ashley is a c***,and his cohorts with it,but unless Dr. Who is with us,we can't go back in time, and even if we could,we couldn't change it.

    NEWCASTLE UNITED FOREVER!!

Whatever happens,we will deal with it...we've done it before,it isn't a new experience.!!

    legend tbh

P.S.: are you going all soft on us tray? i've noticed this recently

  5. Who gives a s***, doesn't play for us. No feelings of sympathy for a man who's set up for life and gets to retire with no money worries at the ripe old age of 31. If I get to retire at 65 I'll be happy.

    It's not always about money.

actually, i think you'll find it is for people who don't have any dude

I could understand if it was a prick like Ronaldo. It's Martin Laursen though, a top professional both on and off the pitch.

you might be mistaking apathy for dislike here...?

I think it comes down to the same thing. I feel sorry for Laursen because he's a genuine bloke who I'd say values playing football ahead of money.

on what do you base that?

not that it matters, the point stands - i'm still far too devastated that i never made professional football 'cause i was s*** and overweight to have sympathy for this fucker

Just my opinion, it's the way he comes across. Not all footballers are c***s.

of course they're not, but a millionaire like laursen, assuming he's not a c***, will look back on a nice career and a comfortable retirement

i understand it's just platitudes from people, they're just unnecessary

The thing is, unlike many others (some on our own books), he's not carrying on, fleecing Villa (or any other clubs) of money, while fully aware of his knee problems. He's realised he can't pursue a pro career from hereon, and has packed it in. The "honorable" thing to do.

  6.

It's their prerogative to be honest. Why should they potentially injure players before the CL final in a dead rubber?

Just to keep us happy? By the time that game comes around we will have had 37 games to get s*** in one sock.

We need to take charge of our own destiny and not rely on other teams who have a totally different agenda.

absolutely right. if you follow the link though, you'll see why dave whelan is still a cunt  O0

  7. According to talk sport then, they will play fill strengh teams against Hull and Arsenal, and if they get there 4 points, they will play a complete reserve team, giving as many as 5 players there premiership debut. If Hull stay up because of that match its a disgrace. Also i carnt see wigan trying to hard tonite.

    :dowie:

we deffo need them to drop points so they have to beat Hull

    :kinnear:

This is absolutely ridiculous. If I were a Wigan supporter (I'd be one of 5, I know!!) I would be insulted by Dave Whelan's cretinous comments. Shame if we derail their title challenge??? What a fucking wankstain this man is!! He, Stever Bruce and Wigan football club can all fuck off. Classless tossers the lot of them.

  8. Late to the post-match reaction but yeah, thoroughly enjoyed it as you can imagine. Almost lost my voice from all the chanting/screaming, but was worth it. Generally electric atmosphere, and a surprisingly impressive performance. Honestly thought it was going to be doom and gloom after the unfortunate Boro goal, but nothing like it - you came right back into it and in the end, could have had more than 3.

What'll it take to convert ye?

  9. Barely scored since xmas ??

    Get rid tbh

His careers clearly over, he doesnt care anymore

    Burnt out. The new Kluivert.

You're going str8888888888888888 to hell with those comments, the pair o'yiz

  10. For those who is saying he should lose some weight. I met him at a friendly match when he was with Middlesbrough and he was f***ing HUGE. I mean like pure muscle, absolute tank. I think his weight is a big part of his game.

Agreed. It's not his weight that's the problem, but rather his agility and mobility. I think doing some sort of yoga or tai chi would go a long way to helping him
