I had forgotten Pope’s age too. He’s 31, while Pickford is 29, Ramsdale 23 and Johnstone 20. You can see Southgate’s thinking there too - if he thinks of Pickford as the #1 (which obviously he does) and if there’s not that much to choose between the others (which seems fair enough) then of course you take the younger back-ups with a view to the Euros and the future. Again, that calls into question his choice of Maguire and Henderson. But to call the exclusion of Pope “genuinely absurd”’ and wonder “why the hell he isn’t in the squad” seems…a bit reactionary. FWIW I love international football. I love the whole country coming together. I love players playing for their country rather than who pays them the most. I love different countries’ characteristics - both fans and players. I support England because I’m English. It just wouldn’t occur to me not to. I do sometimes feel a bit simple saying that.

You buy English to give you flexibility elsewhere. Most of your older players are HG and will be replaced over the next year or two (Trippier, Burn, Pope, Wilson etc). I think it’s a great plan tbh.
