Some of them clearly think that we'd perform better without Owen in the side. Either going 4-4-2 with Martins & Carroll. Or Shola, Xisco, or a crippled Viduka. Or going 4-3-3 with them. Who the f*ck knows. They never explain their opinion beyond "michael owen is crap".
  9. Was that down to brilliant defending or luck though. Cleared like 3 off the line didnt we, few inches either side from where they landed and it was probably another goal.

To much of a general statement once again. Things are never just black and white. Martins and Owen are two different players with different strengths and weaknesses. Owens strengths are his runs off the ball & his finishing after that. His ability to get onto good crosses. Martins strengths are what he can do running with the ball & the fact he has a strong shot on him from around the area. They both have others obviously, but those are the main ones. Clearly its easier to play to Martins strengths than to Owens for a crap team who cannot pass. As you're relying on him to do more for himself. This doesnt make Martins a better player than Owen, just a different player. If we played to Owens strengths he'd be the better player in terms of finishing off a move as his runs are more likely to end up with goals than Martins having the odd smash at goal. He's also a more clinical finisher. Raul is the same kind of player. He doesnt work magic all by himself, but hes brilliant with his movement & with service he's become one of the best in Europe. Point being it becomes even harder to play to owens strengths when you're playing the best sides in the country. As they'll make it hard for you to pick out passes, they'll watch runs better....they'll pressurize better etc. I dont really see the confusion tbh
  11. Just need a positive result to get them lifted again, realistically draws dont do it. Al being there should have an impact already....a young lad like Carroll whos to busy wanting to score goals for the first team to be concerned by confidence could be key aswell. Barton coming back would add another player more concerned by his drive to win than confidence.

    Jonas Gutierrez

Said before, Argentina suits him more. He has ability dont get me wrong, but for Argentina he doesnt have to do it all himself. He can go past a player and tap it to another lad who can go past 1 or 2.... Makes it far easier for him. For us he has to go past 2, run down the line...look to find players that arent even attempting to move into space or try to cross the ball before the two lads that were marking him get back to cover. Already a fair test of ability....add into that having to track back endlessly to help our defence and the lads probably shattered after a half hour let alone to be doing it all himself again the rest of the game as much as he can. So in that way he probably is just trying to do to much for us as the other players rely on him more when hes on. Just knock it to jonas and expect him to do a bursting run with it everytime. Most of our midfielders seriously fail at making runs towards the box without the ball...or any kind of runs atall to help out. He can still be great for us if he starts though, the other players just have to work more with him. Enrique especially when hes fit.

    Some positives

Certainly going to take something special. The worrying thing is the Newcastle that will survive this season is a Newcastle we havent seen yet. None of our performances have shown a glimmer of us being able to stay up in recent times. So our best hope is that one of these games we turn into a different side....we need a big win. Just like tottenham last season.....identical. I just hope this result WAS like the draw with birm last season.....and not the 0-0 against bolton.

To be fair his point is valid, but I agree with his execution lacking maturity. Hopefully Martins stops being a baby. About as valid as when he claimed the same last season and owen ended up saving our asses with 6 in 8. Yeah what a genius. Massive difference, in that team we had good players around him that meant his only need was to apply a finish, he's missed a fair few sitters this year and we can't allow for passengers with just one asset we don't have the quality. He missed a few sitters last season. Only difference in squad last season was Faye, Barton & viduka playing. Carroll can fill vidukas boots, bassong..faye's & perhaps Guthrie...Bartons. Though i agree getting Barton back is key. We still have the players though. I fail to see how its a sound point to say lets give up on owen when we havent even had the chance to implement the system that he fit into perfectly last season. Shearer himself has said they were training with 4-3-3 so we were about to give it a go...as i say it went a bit wrong with martins going out. Where ronaldos going wrong is his endless hate of owen, as if everything is down to him. Pretty clear that even if theres no way owen could possibly be effective in our side.....(based on nothing & pretty unlikely), its certainly not his fault but rather the way we're playing. Mate I'm sorry but just reading Carroll filling Viduka's boots got me disagreeing with you. Viduka has a tremendous touch and football brain, a prime example of Owen benefiting from that came against Spurs with his dummy for the 3rd. Carroll doesn't have that, his strengths are flick ons which would benefit Martins pace. Bassong Faye is fine as Bassong is better in my opinion. Guthrie and Barton I don't know, Barton as a good eye for a through ball, Guthrie's passing strength lies more in his ability to pass at range, if we can get Guthrie AND Barton in time for Pompey which looks likely then we could be laughing. Think Carroll has the potential to be more dangerous in the air especially than viduka was end of last season...which may make up for it. Though i know he got a few headers. But he'll be high on confidence now also, big plus for us atm. We'll just have to see, have to try it before ruling it out though. Owen got a few goals last season just ghosting in from space & using his head...& he has a knack for getting onto rebounds or loose balls from that position. He also has a knack of going on a run of goals after having a run of games without scoring. Just cant see the reasoning for giving up on it...think its misplaced frustration.

Checked the posts to see if i was mistaken. Yeah you clearly loved him, my bad. scores in big games? look at his record in international tournaments, it's dogshite You also slagged Given for clearly "losing his reflexes", Mort was crap & the 4-3-3 system in general wouldnt work. Along with claiming Cacapa was a class defender. Along with Rozenhal. Shouldnt really be getting on my back about my opinion should ya, because yours is clearly so proven to be brilliant Owen has alway failed against good defences - put him in a great team and he'll still not do owt against good players Given's reflexes are not what they once were, he's 33 ffs Cacapa WAS class, he captained one of the very best teams in europe for 4 seasons. Rozenhal is a decent defender for me, better than Taylor and at CB Edgar anyway Mort and Ashley didn't get the players we needed in the summer of 07 or Jan 08, which is what I was getting at Apart from when owen won the fa cup against arsenal, or when he scored against brazil for England, or when he scored against portugal, or when he scored against argentina blah blah blah Givens shown this season his reflexes are still class, come on. Cacapa has been shocking since he joined us which is when you were claiming he was brilliant didnt fully read your mort post so ill give you that one

  18. Based on what carroll did yesterday it just might be. Our passing football is crap, but we do get balls in the box. If he can put them away like that we've a chance.

  20. Hard to say whether we're up to it or not so far. Still reckon 4-3-3 could see us beating most sides we come up against if we play it as we did last season with carroll in place of viduka. We'll just have to see.
