Despite me slagging off the idea in your thread, any upgrade on Smith has to be a massive positive. I agree on the upgrade, but it the lack of goals that sent us down really Bollocks was it. It was the fact we had a midfield who neither kept the ball nor offered any ounce of protection to the back four. Our defence was made out to be our weakness, when really they were the best players in the team.

neesy man, do you not realise how s*** our midfielders are? Would you really advocate Smith playing 30+ games this season? This is our most important signing because it's finally addressing the thing that sent us down in the first place!

He'll be playing for Spain before then! no he wont.....fantastic defender but gives the ball away far too much when he has it. They don't really have many options at LB though.

This guy is here to give us energy and somebody who can actually run for 90 minutes, it's massive credit to Hughton for seeing what we lack. I have. But we have to remember that this is a £3.5m signing - which is probably our whole budget. It just means we're going to be left with no creativity in midfield if we don't sign anyone else (which is probably pretty likely) This is the kind of signing that should completely change our midfield. I'd have much more faith one of Guthrie/Barton knowing that there is somebody who can run and impose themself physically alongside them. We've been crying out for this type of player even longer than we have a 'creative' midfielder imo. Plus, our creativity will come from Ben Arfa
