We were in an excellent position to get a top manager in if he hadn't done that, whether it was that summer or the next. Obviously ended up with Souness. Theoretically if he had stayed who would you have liked to have come in? Difficult to say without casting my mind back to who would have been possible in the summer of 2005 but the summer of 2004 saw Mourinho/Benitez come to England of course. We could have done far, far better than Souness obviously.

I'm still amazed he got away with this one. If another manager criticised our fans there would be big problems. Look at the reaction to Ferguson's "wee club" comments (despite Pardew saying similar many, many times), however at least Ferguson had the decency to apologise and express his respect for NUFC's fans and say they deserved better.

Was trying to strike a happy medium between sacking him and keeping him on but totally fucked it and led to a situation where our next 3 managers were Souness, Roeder and Allardyce.
