If the Amazon documentary is anything to go by, Gordon was originally our RW signing. Easy to say with hindsight but if Barnes doesn't break his toe last season we probably would have seen more of him left, Gordon right.

It was an opportunity though wasn't it? I don't think Barnes is the player I'm looking at and thinking we could have chosen a different position to spend our money on. For that I'd probably say just going all in on Guehi and not pivoting to an RW much earlier.

Pete on Loaded Mag went off about the ref for a good few minutes and thought it was the worst refereeing performance he can remember. I wouldn't go that far but I was really taken aback when I came on here and this thread not only wasn't top but was on the second page. I thought he was absolutely shocking.

Have to remember as well that there are a bunch of teams on similar points to us. 2 points separates Spurs in 8th and Man United in 14th. Just been looking at a couple of other 'standing still/not clicking' seasons I can think of in recent memory as well. The main one for me is Liverpool 22/23. At this stage they were on 10 points having had a very easy set of opening fixtures. Similarly Chelsea 23/24 were on 12 points at this stage having relied solely on Palmer. The summer window was shit, no doubt about that, but I definitely don't think there's any need to catastrophise about our position, our performances post Man City, or our Manager.

FWIW I think there are a few legit reasons you can give for why we're where we are, but framing Isak's last few performances as just him lacking sharpness, too much responsibility isn't really it either. Him and Gordon have missed clear cut chances, including a pen, that our style of play under Howe has created. If you can't absolve Howe, then I don't think you can absolve them for those those things, or anyone else responsible for the contributing factors, nor can you just cherry-pick either imo

That's just your choice of excuse tbf. Another excuse you might choose could be that Isak (and previously Gordon) are fucking up simple chances.

League positions don't really factor into your own enjoyment of watching us though don't you think? No one enjoyed the football, including when the the results were good for the most part, and those league positions hide relegation battles and godawful football. We're not firing on all cylinders at the moment but there's a long way to go and from watching us I think our results and league position will improve in time.

Course it is, but so is enjoying the ride, the football and so on, and remembering where you came from is a big part of that.

I'm happy with us being the best Newcastle team I've seen post-Keegan, aye. Better than adjusting your expectations so quickly to the extent you can't enjoy that for more than a fleeting moment imo.
