Only tricky one was Portsmouth over Sheff Utd - decided two Sheff clubs too much, and you'd want a South coast club. But not Southampton, who've offered fuck all of interest for pretty much the entirety of English footballing history. And yes, the mackems go in there - but this does not mean I want to see them in there. I'm surprised at the number of absolute nothing London clubs (Palace, Fulham, QPR) selected on here - four London clubs is enough, and those three have won 1 League Cup between them in their entire histories. Interestingly, all three clubs also average around 25% of their league history in the top division - three seasons out of four you'd find them floundering in the lower leagues. I'd be picking the smoggies ahead of any of them - they've won the same number of trophies as those three combined (1) and have spent almost as many years in the top division as those three combined(!).

Spot on. I think this is the point which is lost. The lad can finish - we’ve seen it - but sometimes the loss of a bit of composure is the price paid for balls-to-the-wall athleticism in play (unless you’re some like C Ronaldo or peak Bale etc - but then you’re in the highest bracket of all). So I both agree and disagree with what you've written - I agree that he was a key player for a couple of years, but he definitely was a reason for Robson's sacking (again, that outburst was from Robson the week before his sacking). There were plenty in that squad who were by that point just causing headaches constantly. Robson should have went at the end of the previous season; once the club stated that 04/05 was his final year, the dressing room just seemed to nose dive. That squad of players was talented but also possibly had the highest wanker % of any we've ever had - they could've kicked on but instead they self-destructed. Bellamy, Dyer, Jenas etc - I don't think many of a B&W persuasion smile when they appear on TV, put it that way.
