Beye Watch:  Geordie Welcome Was So Special

By Craig Hope

MAGPIES new boy Habib Beye admits he was touched by the reception he received from the Toon Army before Saturday's win over Wigan.

The 29-year-old Senegal star was unveiled to the St.James' Park crowd after penning a three-year contract at Gallowgate on Friday.

And the Geordies certainly gave the former Marseille skipper a typical Tyneside welcome as they stood to applaud and cheer their latest signing.

The noise generated by the black and white supporters was such that Habib admits it took him completely by surprise.

"When I went out onto the pitch before kick-off it was amazing," he told nufc.co.uk.

"The reception the fans gave me was incredible and it made me feel so welcome.

"I said to my dad and agent when I came off the pitch that I couldn't believe how much they applauded me.

"Hopefully that is a sign of things to come and I can have a good relationship with the Newcastle fans."

And Beye is looking forward to having those fans on his side after recalling the memory of when he played at St.James' Park in the UEFA Cup semi-final in 2004.

"I remember how much pressure the fans put on us on that night," he added.

"It was a great atmosphere and I can't wait to play for Newcastle at St.James' Park, that will be a special moment."

Beye has returned to France for a couple of days but will be back on Tyneside this week when he will join his team-mates at the club's Benton-based training ground.

Surprised he said all that given tha the marseille fans are some of the most passionate in Europe. HOpefully we will outdo them in his eyes.

yep, that's what i was thinking. Rozenhal said something similar too, which is quite strange, as PSG and Marseille have the noisiest supporters in France..
