Doesnt really tell us much but would seem we are no were near signing him at the moment

Who Modric?  I don't think we can draw that conclusion.

When i read it i thought it was more like we have an interest but thats as far as it as gone hope im wrong like

Yeah. but it seems like Keegan never tells us anything before anything is done. He only confirmed the Woodgate interest when he had moved to Tottenham.

I wouldn't expect Keegan to go any further then positive words/admitting an interest in signing a player, not until the deal was done.  The fact that he hasn't denied the rumours or ridiculed them as he did with the Henry rumour makes it pretty clear that we are after Modric.  But it doesn't tell us anything about how close we might be to signing him IMO.

It's also telling how he jokes about Henry and Deco being at the training ground but not Modric.

Good answers from Keegan.

I agree, very professional.

There is no need to give anything away. If he did, it could hinder the progress we are potentially making with Modric.

Sorry, I'm just naturally very wary of people on here claiming to know insider information for obvious reasons.

If you're telling the truth then fair enough, but there's no way you can prove it so I for one will remain suspicious. No offence meant, obviously.

Hopefully you're right and talks are ongoing.

That's fair enough. Just don't insinuate I'm lying when you can't be sure yourself. I'd happily tell someone my 'source' (yeah, I proper cringed there too) if I thought it wouldn't end up circulated throughout this forum and others.

At least we know he's heard of some of europes best young talent, unlike under souness and roeder when the reaction would have been "who? no pal im in for some average overpriced squad player, that sort of thing wouldn't interest me at all."

Keegan plays down Henry rumours – but likes the Luka of Modric

Apr 25 2008 by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle

KEVIN KEEGAN has laughed off reports linking him with Barcelona’s former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry.

The Newcastle United boss joked today: “It looks fantastic doesn’t it? It’s been fantastic around the training ground this week, with Thierry Henry and Deco here for lunch.

“But let’s get back to reality. I think the Thierry Henry story came from a talk-in I did when a 10-year-old kid asked me if there was one player I would could fetch in, who would it be?

“I said Thierry Henry, and from there we’re now signing him.

“If Mike Ashley came down to the training ground he could have lunch with me and Thierry Henry.

“It’s nice because people believe we can get big-name players, but we have just got to keep it real and not let people draw us down one-way streets.

“But there’s no point parking players here who are squad players. A few people rang me and said they had really good squad players, but we have got enough squad players here.”

If Keegan laughed off talk of Henry he was more serious when he talked about Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Luka Modric

He said: “If you had a list of the midfield players around Europe who Newcastle could possibly attract, Luka Modric would be one of them.

“I think he would be pretty much on any list. If you look at the midfield players who have a fantastic future, he would be one of them.

“But every other club in the league would also be looking at him.”

Meanwhile, Keegan says he has handed his list of summer targets over to Dennis Wise as Newcastle prepare to launch their latest recruitment mission.

The United boss has revealed that, after top level talks with owner Mike Ashley and chairman Chris Mort, a hit-list has been drawn up in an attempt to land the three or four top-class players he believes can take the club to the next level.

However, the actual process of attracting those men will now be left to executive director (football) Wise, vice-president (player recruitment) Tony Jimenez and technical co-ordinator Jeff Vetere.

Keegan said: “We had a meeting a couple of weeks ago. We really put our two lists together because they have got a massive expertise in Europe.

“While we on our list have got all the top ones, they are looking at the ones who maybe you can get who will be the next top ones, but are younger.

“When we out them together, it was quite interesting.

“That’s it now. If someone asks me how we are getting on with our targets, I can honestly say, ‘I don’t know’ because I am not party to that.

“But I will know the minute they are complete or have failed, I guess.”

Aye, it sounds a lot more professional about how we're doing things now although I'd like it if the player at least met keegan before he signed or not.. he could very well convince a player to join by himself after seeing some of the things he's got half our squad doing now.

Most will meet him you would have thought even if it is only a quick visit to the training ground.;)

True it was just keegans last comment of “But I will know the minute they are complete or have failed, I guess.” kinda suggested he wouldn't get speaking to him until he'd signed or whatever. AnywaysI honestly won't care aslong as Modric does sign :p

I think that's Keegan's way of not having to answer questions about every player we're linked with in the press tbh.

I like the sound of this new setup.

Its light years away to the Roeder methods of recruitment thats for sure.  Not blaming him for that but it really does represent a huge step forward.  Clearly meetings have taken place, budgets agreed, targets agreed.  Good stuff.

I think we might, just might, have our transfer activity sorted sooner rather than later.  Keegan will want a full squad in for a full pre-season - minus those that have been at Euro2008 ;)

As past players (incl Shearer) have often claimed it was Keegan who 'sold' the club to them I hope he is still part of the pre-signing process. I would hope Jimenez/Wise are initial contacts who say something along the line of, "Come and speak to the gaffer (Keegan), he really wants to meet with you." Then after Keegan weaves his magic the others tie up any loose ends & other details.
