The height difference between the players comes into it, of course, and Clichy deserves credit for even putting his head up there with a rogue boot in his vicinity, but howay man, red card? It hardly uses excessive force, which is the main criteria for a red card for serious foul play, but it does endanger the safety of an opponent a bit, which is another.
