I would imagine they are very fit, its their profession, they are exercising almost every day and so should be.

But it got me thinking tonight, often we hear the excuse of players being tired after playing 2 games in 4 days, and Southgate blamed Boros loss at the weekend on the Sheff U game going to extra time.

Then, in tonights Manure match, when ITV bring up the player statistics, players were running around 9km on average in 90mins, some less, some more. For example I think it was Kallstrom who ran 6.2km in 60mins.

I would guess a fair few people on here can run that distance confortably in 40mins, 3 times a week (5mins for 1km is a decent pace)

So, whats this shit about being tired? If they are tired, how/why?

Their is the mental aspect as well. I imagine more tiring to do all that running and have to concentrate on positioning, passing of the ball etc. than to just have to run.

A lot of it is impact damage, even more so if you get a good few whacks every match. I'm sure almost every player picks up knocks and minor injuries every match that need time to heal before they can play again.

As already stated, sprinting stopping, jumping and stretching for that distance is FAR harder than simply jogging it.

Cardio wise they are very fit but interms of weight lifting and upper body strength most of them are no stonger than you or me imo.

The fitness one has to maintain for constant accelerating/decelerating - at the highest levels - well, there's only so much the body can take.  Recovery is markedly short compared to days of old when teams only played once a week.

Basketball, I would say, requires a lot more fitness. You're always in play.

Just a shame it isn't a real sport.

They started out using some fruit basket.... took them years to finally put a hole in it. Can't remember exactly how long it went on for, but for a significant length of time they had to use a ladder to get the ball down everytime someone scored.

they still use the fruit basket in korfball but us clever civilised westerners had the sense to pot a hole in the base.

He can barely move around the court but could become one the most effective basketball players ever, simply because he is 7'7" tall.

Could be. If he has some skill. Look at Dwight Howard. Another 'big man' of basketball, but also ridiculously talented.
