Keegan on breaking into the top four, and fifth as a target next year

Well, just caught Keegans interview where he said there is a tight budget and he may not be able to get anymore than 2 or 3 players.

Sort of pisses on the spunking £100m that people on here have believed for ages will happen.

What does everyone else think of this?

From BBC:

Kevin Keegan has been promised funds to help turn Newcastle into a club that can attract the biggest names.

Ahead of Newcastle's clash with Chelsea, chairman Chris Mort said they are looking to the future when considering which players to buy.

"Over the summer, we will look to strengthen the squad further," he said.

"In addition to immediate fixes, we will want to acquire players that can help make Newcastle United a top team for the medium and long-term."

Newcastle have already missed out on the signing of midfielder Luka Modric, who rejected a lucrative offer to join Tottenham instead.

606: DEBATE

Who should Newcastle sign this summer?

However, Mort is confident that Newcastle are heading in the right direction and that they will soon be in a position to attract player's like the 22-year-old Croatian international.

"It is frustrating that Modric, like (Jonathan) Woodgate before him, should take less money than we offered to move to the bright lights of London, and European football with Tottenham next season.

"But these are the sorts of difficulties that should get easier to address once we build a squad that competes at the right end of the table."

He's gotta be bluffing. Maybe its in response to losing out to Spurs transfer fee wise, i.e our financial strength wont lead us to be extornioed because we have little to spend... ???

Trying to calm down Mort's over-enthusiastic & inexperienced comments about having money to spend so clubs can take this piss in negotiations.

Might just be that. Mort's a little inexperienced, and he possibly shouldn't have come out and said those things.

Or maybe he's serious? I know it might contradict what Mort's been saying but Mort generally knows what to say to 'appease' the crowd whereas KK has always spoken from his heart.

Hopefully he is just bluffing. Will be a disaster if we don't spend significant sums this summer. Especially seen as Spurs, Villa, Man city, Everton will all spend fairly heavily.

Mort vows to splash the cash

Newcastle chairman Chris Mort has promised to back Kevin Keegan in the transfer market this summer.

Mort, along with Magpies owner Mike Ashley, have already sanctioned the manager's recruitment plans by promising to bring big names to Tyneside.

They were left frustrated after Croatian playmaker Luca Modric opted to join Tottenham instead of taking up a more lucrative offer at St James' Park, but Mort remains confident that the club can attract top players.

"Over the summer, we will look to strengthen the squad further," he said in his programme notes ahead of Monday's Premier League clash with Chelsea.

"In addition to making any immediate fixes that may be required, as with everything else we have done since Mike acquired the club, we will want to acquire players that can help make Newcastle United a top team for the medium and long-term, not just for the next season or two.

"That is why we put a substantial offer in for Luka Modric, who is aged 22.

"It is frustrating that Modric, like (Jonathan) Woodgate before him, should take less money than we offered to move to the bright lights of London, and European football with Tottenham next season, but these are the sorts of difficulties that should get easier to address once we build a squad that competes at the right end of the table."

No need to panic whatsoever here.

MON does the same. Start of last summer he was talking every day about not wanting to bankrupt the club, being sensible, working to a budget, then he goes out and spends. He's paranoid about not being held to ransom.

No manager with half a brain is ever going to say "I've got shit loads to spend" - you'll get bumraped in the market.

This is especially true for clubs recently taken over by billionaires. MON does it, Curbishley has been doing it recently, even Shinawatra has.

Sound business sense.

Keegan basically said no changes will happen over the summer and it was nothing to do with him, he said Ashley was keeping the funds tight and a maximum of two to three players will be bought...

A summary of the next 30 pages:

A: Say what you will about Shepherd but at least he put money in and had ambition.

B: Oh no he didn't, he left us with lots of debts and lined his own pockets and made lots of cash off of the Woodgate deal etc.

A: But Ashley hasn't spent anything!  And now it looks like Keegan will be left with nothing?

B: We don't know that though, Mort said otherwise and he could be bluffing!

A: Idiot

B: Lunatic

A&B: Abuse, abuse, abuse, laughing sarcastic emoticon, etc.
