Damien Comolli faces questions over future

Gary Jacob

Damien Comolli is fighting to save his position as Tottenham Hotspur sporting director. The Frenchman has this summer's transfer window to recoup some of the substantial amount of money that the club have spent, under his direction, on players in recent seasons or risk being sacked in the autumn after three years in his post.

Comolli's tenure has come under scrutiny in part because of the estimated fall in the value of some of his expensive acquisitions and some disagreements with Juande Ramos, the Tottenham head coach. Darren Bent, Younès Kaboul, Ricardo Rocha and Kevin-Prince Boateng cost a combined fee of about £32million in the past 18 months, but they are now arguably worth half that sum. This has led to questions about whether Comolli is delivering value for money.

Tottenham would not want to disrupt their transfer strategy this summer by dismissing Comolli now. Daniel Levy, the chairman, has shown that he is willing to give his staff an opportunity to turn things around. He backed Glenn Hoddle when the board voted on his managerial future five years ago and supported Martin Jol, the manager last summer, when one director at the club wanted to replace the Dutchman with Harry Redknapp, the Portsmouth manager.

Some fans have questioned Comolli's ability to spot a good player, but that does not appear to be a concern inside the club. However, there is some disquiet at White Hart Lane at the money - and hence profit - that could be raised by the sale of the players who have arrived under Comolli.

There are also questions over the fees paid for some players. Gilberto, a 31-year-old Brazil left back, cost £1.8million in January, when he had six months remaining on his contract at Hertha Berlin. He arrived overweight and unfit. Boateng was bought for nearly £5million last summer, also from Hertha, despite Seville, the other suitor, offering half as much. Before that, eyebrows were raised at the arrivals of Danny Murphy and Mido for a combined fee of £6.5million.

Comolli will have a chance to realign his transfer balance sheet, with Dimitar Berbatov expected to realise a profit of about £17million on the £10.9million paid to Bayer Leverkusen in 2006, if the Bulgaria forward leaves.

Signings are not only the responsibility of Comolli. Every member of Tottenham's management group, comprising Levy, Comolli, Ramos and John Alexander, the club secretary, are supposed to agree about a particular player. However, Jol has since complained that he did not want some of the acquisitions, while Ramos rejected eight players offered to him in January.

The club backed Comolli during his disagreements with Jol, but it is not certain that they will do so with Ramos, who holds a stronger bargaining position. There is no suggestion that the club will discard their continental structure, brought in by Levy. Ramos enjoyed success working under the system at Seville, where Ramón Rodríguez Monchi, the sporting director with whom he had an uncomfortable relationship, was credited with discovering the best players.

Quite stunning that! This guy has blown a hell of a lot of money on a bunch of players who don't even make the team anymore. Shocking stuff.

Murphy was signed by Arnesen, and Mido was too.

Commoli also signed Berbatov, Bale, Hutton, and Steed, not to mention the impreesive youngsters from other clubs  taarabt (lens), rose (leeds), Parett (qpr), Pekhart (slavia), Burichie (bilboa), Dervitte (lille). He's done twice the job as a certain cunt Arnesen ever did.

Putting Comolli's player recruitment to one side, it still raises further questions about our current set-up, it's a concern when you see various departments within another club all pulling in different directions.

The club, on the footballing side of things - just shy of signing the cheques as that's the responsibility of the so-called money men, from the ground up has to be run buy the manager aka the most important & influential figure at the club. The buck stops with the manager if on-field results go against the team, it's their head which is on the chopping block so it's understandable that managers by trade a control freaks of sorts, they can't afford to have their efforts undermined by the actions, or incompetancy, of others who answerable to those same people who put their signatures n the club cheques.

The fact remains that the two clubs who are providing the most resistance to Chelsea's billions are the two clubs whose managers still rule of their respective club's football-related dealings with an iron fist ie. Ferguson & Wenger.

An example relates to 'pitching the club' to potential signings. Ferguson's, a club stalwart whose name is synonymous with success, personally guided tours around Old Trafford are not a selling pitch of the highest order, but these guided tours have become tradition over there. In terms of player recruitment/sealing deals, when they're up against Kenyon throwing millions of Chelsea's money at players, it adds a touch of class to the club's selling pitch.

In this regard Keegan is the closest thing we've got to this Ferguson's pitching acumen, he's been a success both as a player & manager, and it's a bloody waste to see him shunted on the sideline while Jimenez has been appropriated with this responsibility. For any would-be signee it must bloody impersonal to arrive at SJP only to be sold the club's vision by a suit-type in a conference room or office.

There's only one bloke who can effectively sell the club's vision and Keegan for the better has run the club & dictated the club's footballing fortunes from the ground up once before, something which the cuurent set of suit-types don't have on their resumes. It's only a matter time before the tendon's of Keegan's patience begin to stretch while the other components of our 'continental system' all dance to slightly different tunes.

IMO, in terms of Keegan walking away from the club again, the clock is already ticking.

At the end of the day, everyone buys a few stinkers and it can't be helped. The real test is whether the good buys outweigh the bad ones.

I'd have said that Berbatov made up for all Comolli's previous mistakes.

One very good signing doesn't make up for 5 or 6 bad ones..  If a club keeps going with that kind of record they'd be ruined.  But never mind, Spurs are the best run club in the world after all according to some on here.  Despite wasting s*** loads of money on poor players.

None of those are poor players tbh.

Comolli signed:

Berbatov  £10 mill

Steed  £2.5 mill

Bale  £5 mill rising to £10 mill

Hutton  £8 mill

Zokora  £8 mill

Kaboul  £8 mill

Boateng  £5 mill

Woodgate £7 mill

Bent  £16.5 mill

plus those 6 youngsters for peanuts. Wouldnt exactly say he's done a bad job tbh.

I know Taarabt cost the most at £2 mill. The rest are not hitting the million mark (some have future fees though like Rose from Leeds and Parret from Qpr but that may just go a little over a million)

Fair enough for the obvious 4, but I'd say you overpaid massively for Hutton.  Time will tell of course.

He's pissed some money away on the others in your list though

That's ridiculous.

You've basically taken 3 of the best value for money transfers of recent times and are using them as a point of reference.

Off the list.

Berbatove, Malbranque and Woodgate are fantastic value for money.

Bale and Hutton are too soon to tell, both look promising prospects though. Boateng I've not seen much of, but he's only just turned 21 and is hardly already to be considered a flop now is he?

Zakora and Bent they overpaid for, though Bent is still a very good player IMO.

Kaboul is the only out and out poor signing as far as I can see.

Hardly a disaster now is it?
