Michael Owen's battle to overcome mumps

Jul 24 2008 by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle

MICHAEL OWEN has revealed why he is missing Newcastle United’s first couple of pre-season friendlies – because he has had the mumps.

As a result the United skipper is behind the rest of his colleagues in the fitness stakes.

And because of this he will not play in Saturday’s second friendly with Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium although he insists he will be on the plane on Wednesday for the tournament in Majorca.

Owen told me today: “When I pulled out of the England squad for the games with the United States and Trinidad and Tobago, everyone thought I had a virus.

“But it turned out that I had the mumps, and they would not let me go in case I infected any of the other England players.

“And while I would not say I was in a bad way it wasn’t very pleasant at all.

“It did affect me for a while – I was quite ill and I was not allowed to do anything for four weeks.

“When I came back to Newcastle our doctor here worked out a programme for me and it has been a slightly different programme from the rest of the players.

“And instead of going straight into the deep end with the rest of the lads, we have just been making slow progress.

“That’s why you did not see me at Hartlepool on Saturday and why I won’t be out there at Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.

“Perhaps I might get to play in one of the games in Majorca next weekend. But I should definitely be OK for our first home friendly with PSV Eindhoven on August 6.”

Kevin Keegan has six pre-season friendlies to whip United into shape – and it’s just as well.

His squad is looking a trifle thin, and the manager himself made a point of saying after the win at Hartlepool on Saturday that he needed four new players for his squad.

Owen will be easing his way back in, while fellow strikers Mark Viduka and Andy Carroll still have a lot to do with their respective Achilles and foot injuries.

Kazenga LuaLua has a muscle tear and Habib Beye has a bit of a problem with his calves, while Abdoulaye Faye and Geremi have both been given time to recover from their exertions in World Cup qualifiers last month.

And when he is released from jail, Joey Barton will come under close scrutiny from fitness coach Mark Hulse and Robbie Elliott so they can work out when he can play again.

I remember reading, back when he pulled out of the England squad, that he had had a bad reaction to booster shots before heading to T&T (whose health standards are not that great, and airborne diseases are therefore more common) -- but no one knew which.  Apparently, it was his MMR.  As for WHY he likely had the reaction, that is a simple logical step:  he has another man's ACL now, which is a transplant, which requires him to be on immuno-suppressants, perhaps for the rest of his life.  Immuno-suppressants are exactly what the name says they suppress his immune system sufficiently to keep him from rejecting the transplanted ACL.  But a suppressed immune system can have other effects, and thus required him to have booster shots at an adult age, and making him more susceptible to bad reactions as well as contracting the illnesses if he does not have the vaccines.

Ok genius.  Why exactly would he want to avoid a Newcastle friendly or two?  Lots of England internationals to play instead?  No.

Must be pretty hard to trick a doctor into thinking you have Mumps to I would imagine.

Money talks. Sicknote walks.

It doesn't really matter for Newcastle United, does it?  Has Owen missed a single league game because of this?  Is he going to?  Answers: No. No. No.

In fact, for Newcastle, the timing of this particular problem for Owen was impeccable (for once).  Kept him out of England (no chance of injury) and he's still going to be fit for the tail end of pre-season and the start of league play.  For once, Owen's timing was great for Newcastle.  Imagine if he'd gotten the mumps in early April and been out for a month, rather than just after close season?  Or if he got it now, and was unable to train at all until mid-August? For what it's worth, my opinion is that Owen could get sick every close season, and so long as he doesn't miss a match for Newcastle that's somewhat more important than Hartlepool and Doncaster in preseason, it's no harm whatsoever for Newcastle United.
